The BMW 2002 Turbo was the first production car out of europe with a turbocharged engine. It caused quite a fury in Germany when it was launched, being as it was as quick as many supercars of the early 70s, but with a boxy coupe shape and yet still carried the audacity of a fast car. The car never made it to the USA….although many years later, several have trickled in using the “classic car status” into the US. The 2002 Turbo was only produced from 1973 through early 1976, and in pretty limited production—around 1,670 made.
The 2002 Turbo opened the door for the future rise of the BMW M-series and performance cars…it also opened the doors for small cars with pocket rocket engines. The 170hp BMW 2002 Turbo was a small, non-hatch pocket rocket, which did the deed way before the VW GTI was even being conceived. A true classic!
