Kia Provo.

Times have changed haven’t they?  5 years ago, i couldn’t have ever imagined getting excited over a Kia product.  These days, with Peter Schreyer (one of my design heroes) in charge, Kia concepts are as exciting, design-wise, as any of the germans.   If this car had a Lancia, Audi, or Alfa badge on it….we’d ALL be on the waiting list.  Unfortunately as a Kia concept, much of the stunning concept material never makes it into production.  That being said, Peter Schreyer is now HEAD of of Kia/Hyundai operations; so anything is possible!  Could this be the next generation Veloster?  Honestly if it looked like that, i could drive this work every day.

Behold the Kia Provo, set to debut in Geneva.  My my…..what a wicked little car.  Look at that funk filled interior.  Love it.  That front end is just sinister.

How Kia gets it right, and Hyundai gets it wrong.

I’ve been driving A LOT these days for my new job—which means I get several hours a day on the road watching cars go by, getting stuck in traffic jams, and finding time to dissect automotive design and styling trends.  It’s a great way to pass the time in a traffic jams! I find myself comparing competing brands side by side as they are stuck in traffic.

What has struck me lately is how 2 brands which are owned by the same parent company have such different philosophies and ideas about how to infiltrate the modern markets of the world.  Kia has hired Peter Schreyer for their design team, which is a huge accomplishment.  Hyundai has Phil Zak, who used to be at GM.

Hyundais are overstyled, overdone, and just frankly ugly from most angles.  I’m not quite sure how Hyundai has captured more market gains in the US market—-considering they are (in general) more expensive, uglier, and have worse interiors than Kias do.  “Hyundai” is also one of the worst names in the auto business, sort of reminding me of how in electronics there is a company called Sanyo which sort of vaguely sounds like Sony.  Hyundai to Honda.  “Kia” on the other hand, doesn’t evoke such weird connections, however through years of budget brand image—has its own share of problems.

But either way, both brands are winning new customers by the day in the US market.  What is shocking to me is how if you didn’t tell me prices, market share, etc….and just showed me the pictures—–i would 1000% think that Kia is the brand that is succeeding much more.  Such is not the case, however.

IEDEI TIP: don’t buy a Hyundai.  they hurt my eyes when i’m stuck in traffic.

Kia (K9) RWD concept.

Peter Schreyer heads up the Kia design team at the moment, and he is of course the person who led Audi out of the dark days and into the light with designs such as the 8N MK1 Audi TT, B5 A4, C5 A6, and many other great designs.  This is Schreyer’s latest design for Kia.

This is Kia’s foray into the wide world of luxury sedans, and supposedly going to be named the “K9” which, I have to say is a completely juvenile choice in name—reminds me of a clumsy police unit on an old TV show.   But the design? It looks fantastic.  Sure there are cues of the ‘coupe-sedan’ trend that’s going on, and Schreyer has always added Audi bits into his Kia designs (in this case, a healthy bit of A7 swooping)—but this looks fresh and edgy, almost making me think that if Lamborghini introduced a sub-$100k sedan—it would probably look like this.  I hope they build it.

Oh, and Jaguar need to pull their heads out of their asses and hire a guy like Schreyer to design stuff like this for them…i could definitely see this car with a Jaguar badge more than a Kia badge.

and look at the side-view mirrors…they are video cameras! SWEET!
