1952 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Sport

The first year of production for the SL was for racing, and the 300SL burst onto the scene with beautiful classic curvy coupe form (0.25 cd!?).  What did they do in 1952? they won Le Mans.

I am going to refer you to the superb article in E-Mercedes for a lot of great background on the 300SL from 1952—-as i think the article is fantastic.  Mercedes-Benz have great digital information about their history these days—if you haven’t already, make sure you download their free iPad application for their museum as well.

Porsche 550 Coupe (Panamericana)

Only 1 of these 2 coupes currently survive.  These were developed strictly for racing in the early 1950s by Porsche and they competed in the Panamericana races of South America and were also purchased by 2 independent South American race car drivers.

Both coupes were missing for many years, until recently the 1st one built has turned up and is starting to make the rounds of car shows.

Arguably, this is likely the car that has inspired the current Cayman in the Porsche stable, and it definitely makes for great desktop wallpaper!
