Autodromo!

I’ve always loved nice watches, but often find myself admiring the style of watches that are far too expensive for my benign budget.  More affordable watches are generally cheaply made and/or far too commoner for me to ever give a second glance to.

My perfect watch would be racing inspired, mechanically sound, built to detail, and not cost a fortune.   Enter Officine Autodromo and their newly launched line of fantastic watches described in the company as “Instruments For Motoring”, inspired by vintage dashboard clusters from iron fed by fuel.

These special timepieces were conceived, designed, planned, and implemented by founder Bradley Price; a good friend of mine and a SEVERE automotive enthusiast.  I knew before I ever even saw the watches that I had to have one, and that they would be beautiful to look at and functionally sound.  I was right.

I see attention to detail which is beyond what I see in watches far more expensive than these; from the packaging to the casing to the band to the detailed chassis identification card which is stamped and found inside the carefully thought out leather box; Autodromo has made a series of relatively affordable watches which can be worn in any setting; from sitting in a hospital conference room to barreling down a freeway in the pouring rain.  I know because I bought my own Wednesday—-a superb example of a black case Veloce—-here’s a dirty grainy pic of me wearing it in the TT:

The launch line-up:

These watches retail for $425, which is a great deal for the amount of detail and design found within them.  Definitely a solid gift idea for the upcoming holidays, OR just a guilty pleasure for the petrolhead screaming inside our own heads.

the new Heuer Monaco McQueen watches.

I love Tag Heuer/Heuer watches, however I do know that they now have a bazillion versions of the same watch in the Monaco. It’s a watch I love, and aspire to own a version of someday—-although I will admit that the watch has become a bit of a cliche within the watch world.  Do i really care? No, not really.  I still really want that black dialed Monaco McQueen edition they had made a few years ago with the Gulf colours—–however i am really digging the progressive look of these new versions.

best watch for under $100?

My favourite watchmaker is definitely Tag Heuer.  I love my Monza very much so.  However i’ve been wearing my Monza every single day for the past 3 years, and today I decided to pick up a ‘cheap’ watch for under $100, that I can use sometimes to give the Heuer a break…..i’m really picky when it comes to watches—so finding a ‘back up’ ain’t so easy.

So for a mere $50, I picked up a carbon fiber tinged Carrera Athletic Three Hand.

I’m very impressed by the amount of quality they have packed into a lower priced watch.  I think suggested retail for these watches is around $100….but if you have a look around the net, you can find em floating anywhere between $50 and $75.  I haven’t seen alot of them in person, however I gotta say that on first impression, to an outsider, this definitely looks worth MUCH more than $50.  Great stuff.

Here’s the watch I bought, followed by a link to the Carrera Time website, which has a full catalog online.

Dream Watch.

I own a Tag Heuer Monza, which i received as a wedding present a couple of years ago. It is an AMAZING watch—-i have been wearing it non-stop for the past two years. I still love it as much as when i first got it. It still looks brand new (well, aside from the slightly worn band), and it just excudes so much class, subtlety, and vintage racing sophistication—–all the way down to the little writing in the dial that says “MONZA”. Fantastic watch. I will love it forever!

My dream watch costs about 3 times as much as this one—it’s another Tag Heuer, and it has racing stripes! Tag Heuer released a limited edition Monaco watch in 2004 i believe—-with a white dial, red and blue racing stripes, and the Monaco logo in the center. Then a couple years later, they released a black version with the gulf stripes and Gulf logo. the price? around $4000. But i want one—-OH i want one bad. One day….one day.
