Saab 9-3X now on order sheet at US Saab dealers…

Amidst the soap opera of what has become SAAB, The SAAB-Spyker deal seems to be building confidence in its conclusion.  The latest positive sign seems to be that after over a year of US market dormancy, the SAAB 9-3X has been added to US dealer order lists!  It will be months til customers get their orders filled, and maybe this is a way for the company to gauge interest in products after all the hooplah….but it seems that the 9-3X would nicely fill the gap that the Audi Allroad’s absence in the US market has created; an upscale, european wagon with AWD.

To all those people who have been rooting for SAAB to be rescued, this is your time to walk the walk and place your order for a pretty cool AWD wagon.  Good decision SAAB, now back up all this talk with some kick ass new products, and success will be yours!!

VW buys out Karmann & plans new car.

Karmann was of course made famous by the strange and interesting Karmann Ghia, which used Beetle underpinnings with a much prettier and more interesting body shell to create something interesting with.  Of course the company went on to build other cars with VW, and with other companies (Let’s try to forget that Karmann built the Chrysler Crossfire convertibles…which were truly terrible).

The company went bust recently, and now VW has announced that they will be buying all of the assets, and also will plan to build a ‘new’ car using their facilities.  Maybe they’ll bring back a ‘modern’ Karmann Ghia? That would be damn interesting.  Most likely suspect is the upcoming Bluesport roadster.

Fiat-Chrysler: DONE! Chrysler name = dead?

2009-06-09-Chrysler.jpg

Finally!

So what’s gonna happen now?  Is the Chrysler nameplate going away?  Businessweek is suggesting there is a “high likelihood” that it will be Jeep, Dodge, and Fiat left in the end of the battle.  At first, i was a bit surprised—but the more i think about it, the nameplate “Chrysler” doesn’t really offer much in terms of a solid product line.  If anything, Dodge has always been the one carrying the brand.  Plymouth used to be a big name in the 70s, but slowly faded away into the automotive graveyard.

So lots of questions! Will Alfa Romeo come back with Fiat?  Will all the Chrysler products be called Fiats?  Will there be Fiats sold as Dodges? Or will Fiats simply be sold as Fiats, Jeeps as Jeeps, and Dodges as Dodges?  Is Fiat bringing the Tata Nano to the USA?

So many questions….but I do agree that Fiat will do a much better job than Daimler did with Chrysler.  Let’s see what happens as the details unfold….
