the making of a Dunhill document case.

To me, there are certain essential accessories for a modern gentleman; a nice car, satisfying clothing, a functional and stylish timepiece, a technologically sound mobile device, and a bag or brief for work essentials.

There isn’t a day where I don’t enter my workplace empty handed; by my side I always have some form of a brief or a document carrier.  I currently use a Jack Spade Twill Brief which I really love—-however the radar for my next brief is always on and the most likely candidate is a Dunhill case.  I am of course a huge fan of Dunhill gloves and clothing, and am currently scouting out my next storage device like a spy before a war.

cool + cool + cool = uncool?

Stirling Moss is a living legend, that Ferrari in the photo is pretty damn (overpriced) sexy, and that leather racing bag by Caracella is pretty wicked looking.

So why does this photo seem so tacky/cheesy? Overkill maybe?  Artificial-ness? I think the car and the bag are just too ‘matched’…a plain blue Ferrari would have worked much better. Is the problem Sir Moss’ shoes? HA! Is the problem that the presence of a Ferrari make things instantly uncool? I’m not sure—and maybe you won’t even agree with me.  I believe this is evidence that things don’t add up as they should sometimes.

impulse buy of the day. gloves.

Never let me go near a Dunhill store without taking my wallet from me; that’s the moral of the story.

As of yet, I have never been able to walk into a Dunhill store and not walk out with a bag in my hand, in fact my impulsive buying at that shop in particular is a bit scary.

The damage today wasn’t that bad….err, relatively speaking.  I’d been looking for a new pair of winter gloves for the past week or two, having even dismissed a pair i liked somewhere last week because they were “too expensive” ($100)…..fast forward to today, I was invited to the Audi Forum in Manhattan for some free drinks, a look around the cars they had, and a general social gathering.  The gathering was quite boring, so i swigged down 2 Amstels and decided to walk 9 blocks to go to the Dunhill store.

The damage?  Well the winter “Shearling” gloves i bought were $225.  But OH how they feel when i put them on……the inside is lined with mink fur, and the outside trimmed in leather and suede.  I drove home in the TT, and the gloves just felt EPIC.  Surely the fact that i’d just spent $225 on them made them just that much more beautiful.

oh Lancia you crack me up!

There’s no point in posting the ‘exterior’ of the new Lancia Ypsilon—because it is about as attractive as a pimple on a toad.  After seeing the photo of the interior, however—i was reminded of something.  But i couldn’t quite figure it out!  I have never seen such an awkward pattern on the seats of a car….and then i remembered what it reminded me of! Surely the target audience has now been figured out.

BTW, this horrendous little car will be coming to the US as a Chrysler soon; not much of a surprise, i suppose.  What an embarassing end stage to a great marque..

driving gloves quest: Audi vs. BMW vs Porsche

Well i bought some superb Dunhill driving gloves last year, however i lost one of them; a true tragedy in my petrolhead bubbleworld.

So about6 months ago, being the Audi fanboy i am; i ordered a pair of Audi driving gloves through the Audi Collection.  I really like them.  Very soft and well made.  $49.00

For you BMW fanboys, BMW is selling driving gloves as well, through their BMW Lifestyle section.  They look pretty good.  $40.00

Porsche Design has also come out with a set of driving gloves; they are clearly the flashiest and pose-y out of the bunch…but they look pretty good.  $190.00

Maserati driving gloves

Maserati driving gloves

So i lost my dunhill driving gloves sometime back in February. Actually i lost one side, i still have the other side…..i’m hoping the side i lost turns up unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, check out these sweet Maserati driving gloves! I can almost smell the leather just by looking at the dark blue stitched leather and seeing that glorious Maserati trident logo……hotness. Not cheap, but did you really think Maserati driving gloves would be? With shipping to the US, they come out to about $180. That hurts, but still is tempting.

ALSO, they are available here for $125, from a Maserati Dealer in Texas.  (with an extremely unprofessional, pixelated photo! ha):

Wanna smell like a new car interior?

6019

since i was young, i’ve been fascinated by the ‘new car smell’.  i remember going car shopping with my parents and just sitting in those brand new weird 80s cars….getting high on the beautiful smell of leather, rubber, vinyl, plastics, and wood…..just a great smell.  The cars with leather seats obviously had the most interesting smells (aside from BMWs, which just smell like a dirty fat pig butchered in a farm…ahem).

when i first smelled Kiton Black, the first thing that came to my mind was the smell of a new Mercedes-Benz.  It reminded me of the MB E500 my father picked up a few years ago.  Warm suede and leather and a fresh (not overly) clean and airy smell with a very light touch of fruit (very light) thrown over it.  I was instantly convinced.

this stuff is great, truly understated class in every way.  Kiton are generally known for their fine (and very expensive) men’s clothing line—consisting of bespoke suits, shirts, pants, etc.  Kiton Black is their latest fragrance, introduced in 2007 and is supposedly a variation of their previous scent Kiton Man (which i have not tried).  But this stuff is masculine class at its finest in a bottle…

vintage style LeMans bags!

Another great website found with fantastic LeMans era style bags for guys and girls at Grand Prix Originals.  I’m really into that Monza-style messenger bag with the quilts they have in the front! Prices are actually quite good on this site, and they’ve got alot of other great LeMans memorabilia, jackets, books, videos, and other accessories to check out.

Here’s a preview of a few bags, prices range from 69 euros all the way to 380 euros for the large leather travel bag.  Click at the link below the pictures for more details!
