welcome to the world of unimaginative sports car design.

Are there no design themes left?  Aside from the rear end of the Ferrari F12 looking like a uterus, it pains me to see 3 sports cars, all in red, sitting on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show as we speak with front-end designs plagiarized and derived from each other.  There are other headlight designs and front end treatments!!!!!!!! FIND A DIFFERENT ONE!  How repulsive…

resurrecting the gentleman’s ballad: “Drop Anchor”.

I’ve never really been a ballad-loving person, however I have always had a soft spot for the sweet sounds of sophistication and true feeling.  Martin Rossiter used to be the singer in the mid-90s band GENE; one of my favourite bands from the much remembered world of Britpop.  Martin just released his 1st debut solo album today entitled “The Defenestration of St. Martin”…..full of piano, the thoughts of a gentleman, and laid out with the elegance and grace expected of Mr. Rossiter.  It is a beautiful album, a soulful album…..do go listen.

buy the album on iTunes and HERE

black friday = day to put on winter wheels.

For some people ‘Black Friday’ represents a ridiculous day of USA consumerism with people falling over themselves to save $5 on a rubbish sweater for someone they despise anyways….for me, black friday means it is the day to get my matte black winter wheels on my daily workhorse;  my 2012 Audi A3 quattro.

book: Leica “Witness To A Century” (2012)

I ordered this book a while ago on pre-order, and it arrived this week.  $22 from Amazon.  An amazing and beautiful book for a very low price. Hardcover, by Alessandro Pasi (2012).  Highly recommended beautiful short history of Leica with full page spread profiles of every significant camera produced in their illustrious history.  This book does not read like a publicity book—-instead it is full of beautiful and iconic photography throughout their history.   This is the 3rd edition of this book, revised to include the digital range through the recent M-Monochrom.

Yes I am a Leica fanboy these days and it is driven by my love of creating fotos.  And there’s nothing you can do to stop me!

Being inspired to create is so much nicer than obsessing to appreciate.

ISAT Berlinette Project.

The greatest car in the world…well, ever….is being re-imagined by students and teachers of the ISAT (Institut Supérieur de l’Automobile et des Transports) of France and being presented at this week’s Paris Motor Show as a concept study!  Renault’s recent glory of the A110-50 was a modernized NEW car, whereas this study takes great homage from the original, with mild reinterpretation of details (lights, fenders, etc).  The result is difficult to see in this mystery-filled video teaser—–but I am very intrigued by what I see already!  Good on ya, kids!

(advance apologies for the rubbish music….please turn the volume down!)

Toy – “Motoring”

A great song by a great band!  The album is out now….go and buy it!  Bringing the spirit of early 90s UK shoegazing mixed with a healthy prescription of 70s bavarian kraut.  A superb combination.

Breton.

(09/06/2012, Bowery Ballroom, photo by Syed IEDEI)

Breton are the sound of right now.  We saw them last night at the Bowery Ballroom NYC and they were just mint in every way.  They are the sound of the completely new….futuristic…original….and groovetastic.  Been listening to this non-stop for the past week, and will surely listen even more after last night’s show!

This song is from their EP “Sharing Notes”:

The album is called “Other Peoples Problems” on Fatcat Records.  Go and buy it.

nearly 7 hours done. Standings…

The Toyotas started off fantastic, running 2 and 3 for quite a while.  As seen before, the #8 was in a terrible crash with a crappy Ferrari driver, and the #7 Toyota had contact with the Deltawing, causing major damage as the car has been stuck in the pits for ages now.   The #3 Audi R18 Ultra which was crashed is in 14th position right now, and the #7 Toyota is still in the pits, currently in 24th position.

That leaves Audi in #1, #2, and #3 with the e-tron quattro taking the top 2 positions thus far.  There are still 17 hours left to go, so nothing can be said about what is still remaining to happen.

The LMP2 category is solidly competitive at th emoment, with the #48 Oreca Nissan up in the lead with 2 Morgans less than a lap behind!  Great to see Morgan back in competition here!

The GTE pro and amateur classes are solidly led by the C6 ZR1 with nearest Aston Martin (my personal favourite in this class) a couple of laps behind (pro).

#7 Toyota takes out the Deltawing.

The Deltawing was an interesting concept, albeit not really competitive in any way….if anything it was getting in the way of most cars on the track.  That being said, it got nailed pretty hard by the #7 Toyota.

Blame Ferrari.

An awful crash which just took out the #8 Toyota TS030 today in Le Mans.  A damn shame…..amateur privateers driving Ferraris ruining the LMP1 class race again this year.

Meantime, Toyota have done superb today—until this terrible accident.  Anthony Davidson is apparently OK after the accident.  The driver of the Ferrari is also OK.

Where to watch Le Mans online! (streaming)

I will be updating this during the course of the next 24 hours.  Unfortunately I am not able to embed any of these sources directly onto here, so the best I can do is link to some sources.  If one of them fails, use the others as alternatives!

Edit @ Noon, US EST:  I now have a great French-English Le Mans TV live video feed embedded in this post!  Just click the play button.  This feed should be reliable for 24 hours.  If you don’t like the bilingual feed, my suggestion would be to play this video feed and listen to Radio Le Mans (linked below) at the same time.

These are not scams! these are good, hopefully reliable sources to stream the best race on earth!

foto of the day: TS030.

Toyota has a monumental task this year at Le Mans—with a brand new Le Mans team and race car, trying to fill in the vacant shoes of Peugeot.  Audi are trying to surpass Ferrari on the all-time list of Le Mans victories, amidst the most dominant period of endurance racing ever seen by any marque this side of Porsche in the late 70s/early 80s.

I really miss Peugeot, however am also very pleased that Toyota have put their guts into building a race car that will most definitely be competitive.  In early practices, it has been reported that the TS030 was only a bit over 1 second slower than the R18 e-tron quattro—-and considering all of the madness which actually goes down in the race and the traffic issues; I’d say Audi definitely have some competition this year.

That being said…The TS030 is fantastic to look at, and nicely fills in the shoes of the missing Peugeot blue and white race cars with their new blue, white, and red livery!

Lurking in the shadows…

What a week it’s gonna be for the Audi Sport team at Le Mans!  4 R18s are ready to pounce next weekend.  Here’s a photo of the sinister R18 e-Tron quattro lurking in the transporter.

As an Audiphile, this week feels like a holiday! You’ll be seeing a lot of Le Mans coverage through next weekend on here…as Audi gets ready to surpass Ferrari on the Le Mans all-time win list this year.

foto of the day. the coolest rear view mirror!

The Audi R18‘s digital rear view mirror.  The R18 has no rear visibility aside from the side-mounted mirrors.  This is a very cool, tech solution is an active matrix OLED display with excellent image and screen quality.   On top of that, there are NIGHT and DAY settings, to avoid headlights glaring at night and to avoid sun glare in the day.

introducing: the Alpine A110-50!

In all its glory.  I only have one word i can say right now: WANT

I am severely biased towards anything Alpine….but honestly lately i’ve REALLY been getting into ‘futuristic’ cars meeting ‘vintage’ in their philosophy…..and THIS is just brilliant.  Magical, even.  Renault read my mind.

big thanks to my friend Jon for tipping me about these photos!  Unfortunately they are low-resolution; however i’m sure there will be plenty of high-res pics after tomorrow.  Tomorrow there should be a lot more information about the technical specs, such as exact engine (400hp V6?)—but what we can confirm is that it is mid-engined.

2012 Carlisle import show.

Yesterday I drove a few hours away to go to the annual Carlisle Import Auto Show for 2012.  I had been tipped off there would be an Alpine A110 there, and I was quite looking forward to checking it out.  I had also been told that there would be a lot of great Audis there, which there were!

The show was fantastic……I would say the largest turnout was for Saab and Audi fanatics with lots and lots of fantastic Trollhatten and Ingolstadt eye candy.  I sat inside of the Alpine A110 for what felt like at least 20-25 minutes.  The car FIT LIKE A GLOVE.  I have never been as comfortable in a car as I was in an A110.  Unbelievable….i didn’t want to leave.  The A110 is pure magic…..i must have one in my life!

After leaving the Alpine, I was completely distracted by remembering the car—and honestly I had concentration difficulties.  The Audi area quite brilliant though; lots of great Ur quattros, a couple nicely set up TTs and several nice 4000s and Coupes!  Audi had brought the original R8 LMP car as well, and near it was also a Sport quattro!  The Saab area was flourishing with “Saab Pride”; their enthusiasts knowing their marque is currently in a coma on massive amounts of life support if not dead already.  There are still whispers of a Saab corporate revival floating around in China; but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I felt the Carlisle show was a true enthusiast’s show; the people were very nice, there wasn’t much ‘snobbery’ as felt at so many car shows, and not every car was shined to perfection like at other car shows—there was room for originality, something I very much appreciate.    I spent much of my day poking my head into interiors, and breathing in a large inhale of the different smells of older cars; something which fascinates me.

I didn’t take a lot of photos; in fact taking too many photos at car shows sort of annoys me these days, as it prevents you from actually paying attention.  That being said, here are some of my favourite cars from the day:

loved this crazy, track ready Renault 8!

I spent 1 hour out of my 3 hours at the show with this Alpine.  Honestly, I believe I am truly obsessed.  HA.

i don’t smile much for photos….but i am quite happy sitting inside.

onto the Audis!

I found this sign to be entertaining, belonged to a 1969 Avenger kit car:

video of the day. A310 V6.

I’m not sure how they mounted this onboard camera for this drive (is it on his shoulder!?), however the effect is that it makes you feel like you’re sitting between the driver and navigator…..very disorienting, however feels like you’re really in that superb Alpine A310 V6
