Audi S3 Sedan: undecided.

2015-Audi-S3-Sedan-front

The jury is out.  I really still don’t know what i think of this new 2015 Audi S3 Sedan which debut’d last week in NYC.  Let me just tell you that I actually have a deposit down to be one of the first US buyers for an S3 Sedan (a deposit i put down last year when the S3 Sportback was first introduced) —-however i am fairly disappointed in the S3 Sedan itself.  The design is nowhere near as interesting as the Concept or as I was hoping.  It is a beautifully spec’d package with 300hp, 0-60 in 4.7s, quattro, and some beautifully trimmed interior and exterior bits—but somehow i feel like Audi has entered a ‘comfort zone’…in which designing a car has become too easy for them.

Don’t get me wrong.  It is a good looking car.  I’m certain it’s a fantastic car, as most Audis are.  I just wish it was a Sportback….OR that it was a bit more unique.  OR I wish that it didn’t look like ‘Audi-by-the-numbers’.

2013 Audi S3

300hp.  3080 lbs. quattro. beautiful interior.  0-60 in 5.1 s. I AM SOLD.   Reserve me a black one with DSG, please.

The 4-door sedan version of this S3 (5-door will likely not be returning to the US market, unfortunately) will be arriving to the US in mid-late 2013.  I will be in line for one.

forgotten concept: Audi (Zagato) Zuma

In 1998, Zagato showed a design study of a rebodied 8L Audi A3 3-door named the Zuma.  It used a 1.9L TDI engine, and like many other Zagato rebodies/concepts—–it is forever relegated to the realm of the unknown!

It’s almost as if Zagato decided they could try to design their own TT—-which of course in concept form had already been shown by this point.  This Zuma actually possesses more than just a little resemblance the the fantastic Lancia Hyena, which surprisingly DID make it to limited production as a rebodied and lightweight Lancia Delta Integrale.

I actually quite like this design…and luckily the car is functional and still exists today (as far as i know)….so it’s not as “lost” as others it seems!

Car Geek: Replicating one’s garage in diecast.

It’s no secret I love my 2 Audis. 9 years with the TT, and almost 6 months with the A3! Surely the only geek thing to do would be to collect die-cast versions of my cars and recreate my garage, right!?

To be fair, I have an A3 2.0T titanium edition—-whereas the 1:43 model i’ve bought is actually an RS3. To my defense they don’t sell the 8P RS3 in the US market or else I would have bought one. A second defense is that my A3 has the same wheels as the RS3 (titanium rotors) and spec’d out as close to an RS3 it could legally get in the US market cosmetically.

foto of the day. F800.

the beautiful Mercedes-Benz F800 Concept introduced in 2010, I have it on good accounts that this car will make it to production in late 2012 as a 2013.  It will slot in under the C-class Mercedes and be going up against the A3 Sedan and the next generation (painfully ugly) 1-Series.

video of the day. missing the winter.

i don’t like the summer…in fact i think it sucks….people are annoying, nyc streets are filled with losers, and i don’t like sweating.   BRING BACK the winter and bring back the good times!  I can’t wait til i get the new car out onto the slopes.

here’s a video to let me daydream a bit……the big daddy version of my A3….the delicious RS3 (not sold in the US, or else it would have 100% been mine)

night lights.

So yeah i’m still gushing about my new car, every day I drive it, i love it even more.  A couple of days ago, I realised that I hadn’t actually seen what the headlights and taillights looked like at night, so i got out of the car and looked.  The attention to detail is beautiful.  The headlights have LED lighting across the top, angling down—with bi-xenon primary headlights.  The look is just evil!  The taillights, are using piped LED tubes—which lead to quite a dramatic effect.

new A3 sedan ‘concept’ is coming to Geneva.

I remember hearing this new A3 Sedan, which has specifically been designed for the US market (the hatchback resistant market) is roughly the size of the B3/B4 80/90/4000—which to me is THE perfect size for a sedan.  I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with…..if it is anything like this sketch, it will be a huge success i’m sure.

Alfa Romeo 149 to the USA

alfa-149-2010.jpg

Since Fiat is on its way back to the US market, using Chrysler like human traffic to do so—i’m more excited about the return of Alfa Romeo.  FOR YEARS now, we’ve been hearing rumours about Alfa’s return to the US.  Since 2006 or so, we’ve been holding our breath….but now it seems it would be practical with a foundation built to support the return of Alfa.

The 8C has already been on sale here for several months, but what else will they bring?  The latest sources are saying the 149 (replacement for the Alfa 147) will also be making a move stateside, possibly renamed as the Milano.

I think that would be THE wisest car to bring to the US market.  Affordable, classy, and a true competitor to the VW Golf, Audi A3, and the next BMW 1-series (out in 2010/2011 probably).  If they price it in the low $20k range, keep the styling as shown in the above photo rendering, and bring the old-school Alfa Romeo attitude with it—-i’m pretty sure Alfa Romeo can bounce back in a very positive way in the US market.

COME ON ALFA! Bring it….
