the fantastic Saab 99 and an ad from 1971.

A new feature on IEDEI, i’m just gonna pick a random year and find different cars from different marques—to compare how differently companies were moving with their directions…many of these were designs these brands had JUST introduced. From the ugly Alfa Romeo Giulia to the progressive BMW E12 and Saab 99 to the bizarrely futuristic NSU Ro80—-1972 was full of ‘interesting’ european sedans.
1972
Mercedes-Benz S-Class (116 Series):
BMW E12 5-series:
Audi 100 LS:
Volvo 144
Saab 99:
NSU Ro80:
Alfa Romeo Giulia:
I find the Saab 99 to be a beautiful, underrated classic. I’m not exactly sure how it drives, although i’m guessing it is not spectacular to drive; or there would be a bit more desirability associated with it. But it’s so cool; in that natural swedish type of cool. It’s got a definite shape, with its own character.
As a child, i always thought the first car i would own would have been a Saab 900. I even went to a shady auction outside of Detroit when i was 16 to buy one, but wasn’t allowed to buy it by my parents! ha.
I gotta say, i’m excited to see what SAAB comes up with in the next few years. I always loved SAAB as a company, but found GM to be a corrupting party in their uniqueness and product line. Here’s to hoping SPYKER brings some fun back to the brand.
The rumour is that the original SAAB 99 is the inspiration behind a new working concept under the working name “92” or”9-2″
About a year ago, IEDEI had ranted about SAAB and it’s lack of current identity.
It is starting to look more and more that SAAB may find it again!
some renderings/possibilities that have been circulating:
An original 1977 promotional film outlining the (at the time) new Saab 99 Turbo.
Rumour is that the Swedish government have called emergency meetings to meet with GM! Maybe Saab will survive!?
In honor of the beating of Saab that’s occuring at the moment, today’s foto of the day is devoted to the ORIGINAL 1st Saab ever made..URSaab, the Saab 92. It had a drag coefficient of 0.30 (!!!) in 1947! Amazing.
DO NOT LET SAAB DIE, SWEDEN!!!
This is a 2 part video, and the 1st part of it is especially entertaining when they do some drag races of older Euro sedans! right on!
I used to love these old Saabs….and still do. Bring this kind of glory back, Koeniggsegg!
