black friday = day to put on winter wheels.

For some people ‘Black Friday’ represents a ridiculous day of USA consumerism with people falling over themselves to save $5 on a rubbish sweater for someone they despise anyways….for me, black friday means it is the day to get my matte black winter wheels on my daily workhorse;  my 2012 Audi A3 quattro.

machine of the day. 8L S3 3.2 Turbo.

All types of wonderful. In a sea of beautiful MK1 TTs is this ultra-sweet yellow Audi S3 that’s had a 3.2 V6 transplant and turbocharging.

sighting of the day. Corolla?

Yes you heard right!  A vintage Toyota Corolla. But this one is pretty nicely sorted out—-has a very ‘Vintage JDM’ feel to it.  Spotted in Brooklyn.

foto of the day. S1 and RS3 and a tunnel.

I can only imagine the glorious 5 cylinder sounds coming into that tunnel as the Audi S1 quattro and an MTM-tuned RS3 pounded their way through the enclosed roadway.   Beautiful photo.

video of the day. TT-RS.

definitely (along with the RS3) the best sounding production road car under $100k.   There’s nothing like the 5 Cylinder gurgle.   This car is tuned to 485hp.  Slick video too.

Thanks to Skaala for posting this!

how to ruin a 1M.

the BMW 1M is such a cool car, although it may be suffering from ‘overhype’ at the moment.  I wish it was easily available and not ‘limited edition’ so nobody can get one…not that i have the money or anything but we can all dream right!? right!  Maybe one day….However, the owner of THIS 1M should be dragged into the streets and interrogated for bad taste!

the Maserati Bora that never raced Le Mans.

The Maserati Bora is a classy 70s supercar in my mind—and i’ve always thought of it as the ‘kind, gentle, relaxed’ 70s italian supercar—-with its soft lines, non-aggressive stance, and its non-angry look.  Compared to other 70s italian supercars, the Bora (as well as its sister car Merak) have generally come across as the gentleman in a fine wool blazer compared to its riotous peers in gold chains and silk shirts.

What I never knew is that in 1973, Maserati was set to enter the Bora into Le Mans as part of the gran touring class.  Its competition would have surely been the likes of the Ferrari Daytona which had won in 1972.   As i’ve understood the story from QV500.com, Maserati needed to sell 500 Boras to get it homologated for these 1973 races—-which they obviously didn’t do.  Additionally the car didn’t meet the ‘other’ standards for other classes—-meaning that the Bora Competizione (or Bora GR4 or Bora Group 4) never made it onto the the starting grid, and this car was lost into the archives of 70s mystery cars.  I wasn’t even aware of this car, until I stumbled across a photo of a strange looking Bora, which upon investigation resulted in a search which yielded minimal photos, information, or data.   The QV500.com site had the best bit of info on the car I could find, and you can head over there to read their concise writeup about the car in question:

here are some photos was able to scavenge online, with many of them credited to a gentleman named Andreas Birner

video of the day. Widebody S4.

The B5 Audi S4 has really joined the ranks of ‘legendary’ modern euro cars—-it wasn’t just the sportier version of the car that financially rescued Audi in the mid-late 1990s (the B5 A4), but its interesting twin-turbo narrow angle V6 made tuneability of this car as easy as falling down.  The S4 has always been the Audiphile staple, with the right combination of practicality, size, price, and tuneability—-all mated to an all-important quattro.   2nd hand prices for stock/lightly modded cars are stable now in the $10-15k range, and demand is high these days, especially amongst its rabidly enthusiastic following.  The cars that have been converted to ‘Stage 3’ are selling between $15-25k and packing at least 400hp, if not much more…

This, though…is a stunning video outlining the appeal of this modern classic.   Check out the backseats!  Those might be the greatest rear seats i’ve ever seen.

Audi A1 Clubsport quattro

THIS is why I love Audi—–because (A) they are insane, and (B) their attention to detail.  This is a 503hp (!!!!) concept version of their A1 named Clubsport quattro. The engine? Probably the best production engine on the market right now, the 2.5L 5 Cylinder turbo from the TT-RS.  Production? NOT likely!  That being said, i’m pretty sure we are going to see a rock solid S1 (or maybe with a different name, as crossover with the original ‘S1″ may not work out).  RS1? I am not so sure.  But the final result is me feeling VERY dissappointed that we will never get the A1 in this country.  503hp…..holy wow.

Sketches of what kind of gearknob to put in! the details….the details…

the best looking 1988 911 you will ever see.

The owners of early 70s 911s who try to make their cars look ‘modern’ should be imprisoned.  This guy, on the other hand has done the glorious thing and ‘backdated’ his 1988 911 into a 1971 Porsche 911 with upgraded parts and spec’d out.

The result is something which is quite simply…..wonderful.

ah, i had no idea this even existed—-a racing version of the modern Maserati Quattroporte, lovingly referred to as Evo.

This car is privately raced in the SUPERSTARS SERIES and raced this past weekend by a Swiss team at Monza.  Hot stuff, yeah….

“spring” drive

some of us from the QW TT entourage went out for a drive on Saturday.  Obviously as you can see there is still snow in places!  But a beautiful day, and some wonderful roads with some of the best cars made in recent years——the TT is still a magical car to own and drive…

Pogea Racing A1.

the Audi A1 is another in the line of mythical Audi creations which will likely never hit the US shores; but that doesn’t stop me from lusting after one.  This one is a great colour, with dark wheels, and an aggressive lowered stance.  If you were to ask me to build an A1, i would want to build it like this—-possibly minus the wacky retro-y cloth interior though….am more a leather person myself.  Unfortunately Audi aren’t keen on bringing this generation A1 to this country; or it would DEFINITELY be in my garage as a city commuter.  156hp in a 2300+ pound body sounds damn good to me!

Motoring Con Brio’s new E30.

We have a nice little entertaining network of small, niche, automotive blogs.  Enthusiasts with opinions and creativity about some of the best objects on earth; cars! Drew from Motoring Con Brio recently purchased a gem of a BMW E30 325.  I really dig the stance, and it really hits all the right buttons.  I often wish BMW could return to this type of coolness…look forward to seeing the car next week at one of our enjoyable meet-ups.

foto(s) of the day. a MK2 TT?

Well i’m not a fan of the MK2 TT’s weird styling….in fact i think the styling sucks!  But holy hell i spotted this one linked to on QW today and i gotta say it looks great…probably the best modified MK2 i’ve seen and definitely the only NON TT-RS MK2 i’ve seen that really gets me going.  So maybe it does have potential?

……but it’s no MK1….that’s for sure…..but this one looks pretty damn good.

Unsold-in-the-USA car of the day.

Why AUDI doesn’t sell this in the USA, i have no idea.  This Audi S5 Sportback is simply gorgeous in every way.  In many ways, it’s even better looking than the S5 Coupe.

BRING IT TO THE USA, AUDI!!! Hopefully in time for when my family ‘expands’.
