Onement 1, 1948, Barnett Newman

Barnett Newman is easily one of my all-time favourite painters.  Why?  Because his work is brilliant, simple, minimalist, and of great taste in colour spectrum choices.  His paintings are also very very beautiful in person.  The majesty and depth of them does not accurately broadcast in online photos.

I really enjoyed these 2 time lapsed videos done by Mindrelic.  The fact that he actually chose interesting music makes it even better.  Beautiful! I never get tired of NYC.

streetfoto of the day.

i’m really loving grinding my creative teeth on my M8.  “Hip shooting” is my latest interest….pre-focusing the lens, with delayed shutter reload…..and then creating the distance i need.   There’s nothing quite as interesting as walking around seeing the wicked charms of New York City….with a camera in hand.  I used to think nothing was better than driving around NYC, but now i’ve found something even more interesting.

I usually shoot in B&W, but the colours in this photo were too beautiful so I had switched to colour for it.

Breton.

Breton are the sound of right now.  We saw them last night at the Bowery Ballroom NYC and they were just mint in every way.  They are the sound of the completely new….futuristic…original….and groovetastic.  Been listening to this non-stop for the past week, and will surely listen even more after last night’s show!

Introducing myself to the M8.

My Leica M8 is now fully capable, up and running with a Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 lens.   This is my first time ever owning and using a fully manual camera, and my first time owning and using a Rangefinder.  What a machine—-really find it a fascinating piece of equipment.   I just put it all together last night, and am still playing around with the settings.  Less than 24 hours with it, and these are my favourite photos thus far.   Lots more to come in the future, hopefully!

I have no idea what this Chinese cough syrup is made of…but it sure should looks hardcore:

Influencers

An interesting video.  Occasionally borders on cliche, however covers a topic which I often think about.  The subtlety by which influencers pass on information to their environment and the people around them is fascinating.  This video often deals a bit too much about goods and services, however I feel some of the same principles would apply to philosophical, ideological, and even political ideas.

a week in the life (08.23.12)

As i get ready to pick up a new Camera, i’ve been shooting a lot with my Leica D-Lux 3, a fantastic point & shoot camera i’ve had for over 3 years now.  It still takes wonderful photos, and is super small.  Even after picking up my other camera this weekend (hopefully) i’m still gonna hang onto the D-Lux 3 as my pocket point & shoot.

Cities at night…from space.

I am a city person—I want the lights, the sounds, the smells, the chaos, the industry, the cars, the madness, the neverending spirit of a big city that never relaxes.  Sure it can sometimes be extremely frustrating to live in a city like New York City—but i wouldn’t have it any other way.  I drive through insane traffic every day…and it’s never easy…but I still enjoy it.  A young gentleman should be firing his engines through the streets of a bustling city.  All of these things become extra-cool at night!

Here’s a pretty lovely video by NASA from a few years ago showing how major cities look at night, from far out in the sky and from space.  Pretty cool stuff.

sighting of the day. Cougar.

The most desirable Mercury Cougars are the 1967 and 1968 versions (1st design); after which the Cougar progressively became bigger, bulkier, and overall worse.  That being said, sometimes in the right light in Brooklyn, when one sees a ‘lost’ Cougar like this 1973 (i’m estimating)….it looks absurdly large and early 70s in a cool way.  Vinyl roof, chrome wheels, and look at the size of that trunk lined complete with flying buttresses!  Pimptastic….and funky.

I do love living in NYC, particularly in Brooklyn!  NYC has both stayed the same and changed so much over the last 30-50 years.  It is quite enjoyable listening to city old-timers tell their version of how NYC was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.  Seeing photos is also great.  Here are 2 fantastic photos taken by Wil Blanche in 1973 of cars entering the Manhattan side of the Battery Tunnel towards Brooklyn as part of the Documerica project.  Can you recognize all the iron in these pics?  I get a good number of them….but a couple here and there which are just guesses!

As much as things change—-looking at these photos remind me of my experiences driving here every day.  So i guess not everything changes that much!

NYC Premiere: Truth in 24 II

Last night I attended the debut showing of Truth In 24 II (Part 2, “Every Second Counts”) at the Audi Forum NYC.  If you haven’t been to the Audi Forum in NYC, well it’s another lovely place for Audiphiles such as myself to hang out for an hour or two for special events such as this one.  Set on Park Ave. and 47th street—it is open during the week to the public, and on the weekends for special events such as this one.  Thanks to George (who makes a striking cameo in the film!) for getting me on the list for this.

I am a huge fan of the original Truth In 24, as I think it is one of THE great motorsports documentaries ever made.  Jason Statham returns as the voice behind the action, with a slightly overdramatic tone—-however one that really does capture some of the excitement of the spectacle which is Le Mans.

So we all know the story here—-the 2011 Le Mans was one of THE greatest in the history of the La Sarthe beast…..and hence the idea behind Ti24-II was even stronger than the original.  The race was even more interesting, the car was even more stunning (the R18 TDI is just blisteringly cool), and the storyline of that race creates a total atmosphere of how one team battled fierce competition against crashes, adversity odds during the race to become the outright winners.

You don’t have to be an Audi Sport fan to love this documentary—you just have to love the idea of motorsports.  Part 2 lifts off where Part 1 closed the door—and it feels more like a continuation of the story rather than a new one.  I was captivated by the documentary—by the beauty of the race cars, the trauma of watching a stressful race which I remember watching live last summer, and by the excellent narration, cinematography, and conversations with race personnel.

This is a must watch, as was the first one.  Truth In 24 II will be made digitally and on DVD very soon, and will be showing in premieres around the country until then.  Go see it.

Could F1 be coming to New Jersey?

Being a NYC resident, i’m hugely excited by this article.  We have heard this all before, as a couple of years ago there was some buzz about F1 coming to Liberty State Park in New Jersey—-but this time, there seems to be some positivity regarding the possibilities.

night lights.

So yeah i’m still gushing about my new car, every day I drive it, i love it even more.  A couple of days ago, I realised that I hadn’t actually seen what the headlights and taillights looked like at night, so i got out of the car and looked.  The attention to detail is beautiful.  The headlights have LED lighting across the top, angling down—with bi-xenon primary headlights.  The look is just evil!  The taillights, are using piped LED tubes—which lead to quite a dramatic effect.

IEDEI buys a new car!

Apologies for not updating this Sunday, however I was too busy enjoying the hell out of my new car buying experience!

Car shopping has been a very enjoyable experience.   I must admit that I only posted  3 of my favourite cars I reviewed, however there were many others which I ended up testing but never wrote a review on. Some of the others included: Subaru WRX, Mercedes C300, VW GTI, Audi A4, BMW 135i, Audi RS6 (C5), and a few more.  I really enjoyed the Evo 10, and honestly it was the best performing car I drove amongst all of them—however I could get past the vulgarity of it, the subwoofer and battery filling up the trunk, and the poor mileage (15-20mpg).  The Audi S4 was a superbly nice car to sit in and drive, however it felt too imposing for me and too large.  I liked it, but I didn’t love it.  The BMW 335i was a decent package which sort of occupied the middle of the road here.  In my decision making process, I really started to understand why I really didn’t want any of those cars—–because they were either too big, not enough fun, OR not built well enough.

2 years ago, my wife and I had driven to an Audi dealership to drive (and buy) an Audi A3.  We both loved the car, however we couldn’t really afford to buy one new at the time.  Now, we were able to afford one, so that’s exactly what i’ve done.  The car wasn’t easy to find in the spec I wanted, as there was only ONE car in this spec arriving in the USA this month.  I found that car, and had to really do some hustling to get it before somebody else did.

2012 Audi A3 2.0T quattro: titanium sport package (sport suspension, sport seats, black trim interior/exterior, 18″ RS titanium/silver wheels), navigation with ipod integration, bluetooth, open sky (full front/rear sunroof), cold weather package (heated seats, heated mirrors, heated blah blah), S-Tronic DSG (dual-clutch transmission)

I picked up the car on saturday morning.  I have not stopped smiling every since! It is such a riot to drive, and I am so impressed by its agility, composure, handling, acceleration, and its overall build quality.  The car feels extremely well built, each door closes with a german ‘thud’, and every time i get into the special leather & perforated alcantara seats and wrap my hands around the thick perforated leather steering wheel—the car feels very special.  Audi states the mfg 0-60 times of 6.7 seconds, although it feels very quick—even quicker than that.  The quattro system keeps all the 200hp useable and you feel huge amounts of grip in the corners.  A $500 ECU ‘reflash’ adds 50hp and 100+lb/fut torque.  What a car though…..i’m enjoying every minute of it!

There were other cars I tested which were faster or more capable performers than the A3, however none of them offered the entire package of style and substance like the A3 does—–and none of them made me happy like the A3 does!  The interior of the car is just downright fantastic, and really impresses me with its final attention to detail (white stitching on dark grey leather with perforated alcantara inserts) and materials.  The layout is minimalist and very easy to use—especially since much of it was modeled after my other car, the MK1 TT.  The ‘sport’ seats are better than I expected, with nice big bolsters on the sides and on the shoulders.   I had never seen these seats in person before, but was highly pleased with them on the car.  The RNS-E updated Navigation system is very easy to use, and being someone who isn’t particularly tech savvy when it comes to connecting devices, I have found the bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone to be remarkably easy to use and intuitive.

Let me be honest by saying that NO Audi is ‘cheap’ to buy, and I spent a significant amount of money getting the car in exactly the spec I wanted to—–but I will say that after driving this since Saturday, I think the car definitely feels or exceeds its price in every way.  There is a level of build quality and thoughtfulness throughout the design which exceeds my expectations.  This 8P generation of the Audi A3 has been around for several years now, first debut’ing in the US market back in 2006.  However I think the design of the car is just wonderful, and harks back to the older days of Audi, when they were a bit more understated and boxy.  The headlights and taillights are truly a work of art, with LEDs present on both ends and bixenon headlights rolling in the front.   Notice that the Titanium sport package removes the ‘chrome’ outline around the large modern Audi single frame grille design, making the grille far more subtle and not so ‘bling’—-something i wanted as a priority on this car.  I think the blackened grille surround really adds to the appeal of the front end.

Driving wise, I am really enjoying the hell out of the car.  The S-tronic/DSG (dual clutch transmission) is unbelievable….and after years of driving manual gearboxes, I am truly amazed by the performance which can be transmitted to the road with the DSG.  While there are great amounts of satisfaction in pressing a clutch and shifting a gear on a manual transmission car–I am finding great satisfaction of having both hands on the wheel and getting an instant, race car-like shift using the paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel.  This is not an automatic transmission, it is a truly automated manual transmission utilizing clutches (2 of them) just like a manual transmission would—-the difference is that the box is electronically controlled and you press the paddles without the use of a clutch everytime you shift.  If you haven’t tried this gearbox out, you must do so!  There is a level of control which I have never felt in all of my years in driving manuals.   The handling on the A3 quattro is superb, very sure footed and very firm with great levels of grip on the 18″ special RS titanium and silver wheels.  I have already flung the car into corners with great composure, and the stiffened sport package springs keeping everything neutral and alive.  The steering feel is among the best i’ve felt in an Audi.  I am the first to admit that the big weakness in most Audis I have driven has been steering response; in my TT I actually modified the car to with new control arms bushings to improve the response, which it did dramatically.  The A3, on the other hand, feels great right out of the box.

So there it is….my first new car!  I can’t tell you how great the feeling is of getting in the car and smelling the freshness of that ‘new car smell’….it is one of the great joys of life IMO!  To know that nobody else has owned it or driven it before.   I also can’t tell you how happy it makes me to look in my garage spot now and see the A3 and the TT sitting together, dressed in black.  Behold, the beginning of the IEDEI AUTO HAREM!

german car company websites…

I like presentations, and stylistic analysis of what is being represented.  I find it interesting to check out of some of the german companies to see how their website front pages compare.  Yes you mind find this a bit insignificant, and without any real substance——BUT i feel it does have substance.  I feel it shows the philosophies of these companies….and to whom they are catering to.

BMW:  A cluttered, and slightly primitive looking site—-doesn’t really look like it is fitting in with the brand image.

AUDI:  The most minimalist website out of all the 4 brands I looked at.  No added frames or unnecessary features.  I like the focused energy going on here—with the nice grey background.

MERCEDES-BENZ:  a nice website with a photo-heavy base with border navigation on the top margin.  Same type of grey shades as Audi uses; however used quite differently.  The most ‘movement’ is seen on the MB site, as well as the smallest lettering.

PORSCHE:  Much better than the BMW site, but still a bit dissappointing. The ‘small’ icon photos of each car on the left navigator bar is quite annoying, imo.

VW: simple and uncomplicated with a clear goal of shoving its new Jetta into sales-heaven…..

IEDEI @ the NY Auto Show: press day megapost!

Well yes, this was the debut of IEDEI at a major auto show—I must thank JoshD from Quattroworld for setting me up with my media pass.  Much appreciated indeed!  at IEDEI you will not get photos of ‘every car’—-instead you will just get the ones i thought were interesting!

Some observations about the cars I saw at the Auto Show today:

A) I looked at and sat in A LOT of cars today and came up with a conclusion—–I like very few of them.  I tried to only really take photos of the ones I either found interesting or appealing in some way.

B) The interior quality of most cars is quite frankly woeful.  When I sat inside of a Boss 302 Mustang, I was quite frankly amazed at how badly made the interiors really are of these cars.  I KNOW that this is not the point of them—and yes I know that none of this matters when one is aiming for lap times and stop light drag racing.  However, IEDEI looks at the whole picture for inspiration—-and if a car has such a huge glaring gap in its merit, I simply cannot be bothered to care.  After the show, i got into my Audi TT, and felt relieved to be in such a nice place!  Not to say there were not nice interiors at the show, there were (Mercedes, Audi, GT-R, etc…) but most were lacking.

C) Surprises of the day?  I sat in a Nissan GT-R for the first time in my life—–and you know what? I absolutely LOVED it.  The interior felt like a true sports car, with amazingly high quality construction, fantastic seats, and the most amazing tactile paddle shifters I have ever felt on a car—–with raw brushed metal stalks.  The car felt great to sit in—and to be honest I am compelled to take one for a test drive…soon hopefully!

D) the Kia Optima felt like an Audi—honestly the quality of their interior blew me away, and I think that Peter Schreyer (ex-Audi designer) has really upped Kia’s game when it comes to quality of product.  I don’t care for Hyundai much—–but when i took a seat in the Kia Optima, it felt like an interior that was twice the price of the car. Nice one, Kia.

E) the Scion FR-S—-stunning.

F) VW Beetle: dissappointing.  Terribly cheap and tacky interior.  Not worth the hype.

BMW 1-series M:  just looked like a ‘modded’ 135i in person; a bit dissappointing to be honest.  The interior, like the 135i, felt cheap and nasty.  I really do like the 1-series as a car, however I think it never quite lives up to how much I want to like it.   I’m sure it will still kick ass on a track though…

BMW M3 DTM: all types of wonderful.

Audi TT-RS – naturally better looking than the 1-series M, with a much MUCH nicer interior.  Spoke with Johan De Nysschen (head of Audi Of America) about options and pricing.  I was told the car will be about $60k in the US when it is launched this Autumn.  340hp version coming to the US, not the 360hp “plus” version as rumoured.  This is the US-spec car.

the orgasm inducing Audi R8 GT: i couldn’t really get myself to leave sitting in this.  So f*cking cool it pained me to leave it—-

the stunning Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in Gulf livery?  Not sure I understand Mercedes & Gulf colours on the same car—–however I wasn’t arguing, as it looked splendid, although a little bit puzzling for sure!

Mercedes A-Class Concept: beautiful design, flows very well.  striking concept features like the ‘inverted mesh grille’ are very cool.  Slated for the US market in 2013—-if it looks anything like this, it will be so cool to see these on the street!

Nissan GT-R: dare i say i have been developing a great appreciation for the GT-R as a technological masterpiece; today my opinion of it greatly increased after I fell in love with the interior—–it felt like i belonged there.   Yes I know it’s been around for a while, but I’ve only come to understand it. Respect.

Red Bull F1 Car it still annoys me that somehow Infiniti have blagged their way onto this car (probably by begging parent company Renault, who supply the Red Bull engines)—–however man these F1 cars are something else to see in person.  So much detail.

Scion FR-S:  This car is UNBELIEVABLY gorgeous—-so beautiful that I found myself shocked that Toyota has designed it.  It takes many cues from the Audi quattro Sport concept, as well as one of the E-tron concepts—–but holy shit if Toyota/Scion can build this and price it at $25k as a small, RWD car which is under 3000 pounds—-this car is going to be massive!  (note: this car was a mock up, with no working interior—-so i’m not holding my breath about this being the production design)

Saab Phoenix Concept – This was revealed at the Geneva Auto Show a few months back——I thought it looked like utter shit in those photos i saw of it then, BUT i will say the car looks MUCH better in person—-much lower and sleeker.  In fact, while I was taking these photos, another person and I were having a conversation about how this car looks like crap in the camera, but much better in person—-very strange!  Even still, it is NOT a pretty design, but I will say it is interesting.  Yes, the rear lights look like a 90s Firebird, as my friend from Automobiliac.com mentioned…and next to the car in this photo is the designer Jason Castriota.

Volkswagen Golf R/”R20″– really liked the interior touches for this special edition AWD continuation of the Golf R series.  Looked nice and aggressive in its classic R shade of blue as well!

Porsche GT3-R Hybrid – self explanatory cool, even as a hybrid!

I found myself accidentally in front of a Shelby GTS unveiling—–but the car bored me (looks like every other bloody Shelby tuned Mustang!), and the annoying automotive journalists irritated me even more.  I have to say that auto journalists kinda suck—–pushy, a little impatient, and they take way too many photos of anything with wheels….as if they will never see it again if they don’t…

“spring” drive

some of us from the QW TT entourage went out for a drive on Saturday.  Obviously as you can see there is still snow in places!  But a beautiful day, and some wonderful roads with some of the best cars made in recent years——the TT is still a magical car to own and drive…
