B8 RS4 spotted in the USA.

This is THE sexiest and most exciting Wagon  (Avant in Audi language) on sale right now….and having been forbidden for as long as it existed, could this be the first time that Audi is thinking of importing an RS Avant to US shores?  Look at those fenders.  Wicked.  Fruitfully spotted by our friends at Quattroworld at a recent GTG.

There is now a FB page devoted to getting people to join; to convince Audi of America there is a market for this car.  I, for one, am severely interested!  I am currently on the order list for a 2014 Audi S3, however if I was told this would be arriving I would have to re-evaluate things!  The Facebook petition worked for the TT-RS, did not work for the RS3, but let’s hope it works for this.

Dear AoA:  Take the steps we all want you to take.  I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when the 8P RS3 did not come to the US market, and it would be a shame if the B8 RS4 Avant doesn’t come here either.  These are the cars we want and will pay money for!

a tribute to a fantastic car. my TT.

TOMORROW, i am picking up my new car.  After driving my 2001 Audi TT every single day as my daily driver for the last 8 years of my life, I am adding another car to my garage.  The TT now has 115k+ miles on it, miles that have been filled with life, moving, adventure, love, stress, happiness, sadness, soul, nostalgia, future, hope, satisfaction, worry, and time.  We forget how much we experience in our automobiles—and it is a special thing.  In the last 8 years I have owned the TT, i have lived in 8 different apartments.  The TT felt like more of a stable ‘home’ to me in my time of transitions.  When i got the TT in 2003, I was a medical student living in Chicago—-struggling to find my future, struggling to cope with my own stresses, unmarried, and to be honest; pretty lonely.  I have taken the TT to all settings of life, from the backroads of Brooklyn through forests in Vermonts to the sweeping race track turns of Road America.   I rarely get attached to material objects, and I rarely hold onto things more for a couple of years—-but the TT is an exception to my rules.   There isn’t a week that goes by where people don’t stop me to ask questions about the car,  every commute is accompanied by glances, staring, and admiration.  The car is still gorgeous, and unique in terms of iconic design in the modern era of plagiarism.  Most of all, every time i come home after a hard day at work—i park the car in my apartment building’s garage, lock the door, and always glance back at it in admiration of it.

My opinion of the car?  To me, the MK1 (first generation) Audi TT is one of the all-time iconic coupes.  Prior to purchasing it, i dreamt and fascinating about the car quite intensely.  Prior to owning it, I had never felt such attachment to a shape, a design, or any automobile.  In the 21st century—where cars are now churned out to be mass produced profit counters—-the TT represented a creative hurrah by duplicating the gorgeous concept car design into a production reality.  The interior of the TT is by all accounts one of the most expensive interiors ever put into a non-exotic production vehicle.   The humble beginnings off a shortened MK4 Golf chassis are nothing to be ashamed of—as the structure was reinforced, shortened, and optimized for the TT specifically.  The 1.8T engine which was placed in my 225’s bay is a uniquely reinforced engine which is like no other Audi or VW engine produced from that time.  Double intercooled, K04 (big) turbo, and beefed up internals, heads, hoses, and structures.  Easy to modify (my car is estimated at about 275hp after tuning), and easy to love driving—-adding a few simple modifications to the suspension (Koni shocks/Neuspeed springs/Neuspeed 22 inch sway bar) really make the car a total joy to drive.  I have timed my 0-60 runs between 5.0 to 5.5 seconds consistently. A borla exhaust has added a deep rumble, and the lightweight 18″ SSR Type C wheels have reduced the unsprung weight and increased the agility in handling.   The TT always puts a smile on my face, and I love the car more now than i did 8 years ago.  I have often joked with my wife that I would like to keep the TT for many many years—-and to be that old grandad who keeps a beautiful german coupe locked away in the garage—–it is looking more and more that this will be the case (hopefully!).

So long story short, I am keeping the TT tomorrow, and adding another family member. The TT will now become my ‘weekend fun car’.  This is the beginning of the “IEDEI Auto Harem”!  More details on the new car tomorrow—-but for right now I will just say that the new car is practical, handsome, very nicely appointed, and very fun to drive.  I look forward to revealing it tomorrow!

duo.

as an Audiphile, i have to admit this made me laugh a bit! however i am most definitely interested to see what is being released…as the “duo”. Seems like it will be a bicycle…supposed to debut this weekend at the Audi Collection.

http://www.audi-collection.com/duo

Automakers, of course have a history of making bicycles—–and Audi is no different.  Here’s one of their previous bicycles called the ‘Audi Design Cross’….quite nice, although i’m not really a bicycle person—so i have no idea whether it is any good or not.

cheap eurocar wants: under $4k

I’ve got this weird desire to own a ‘cheap and older’ european classic car.  It is a persistent desire and I constantly find myself perusing the classified ads looking for that perfect cheap-ass eurobox…..something that makes me look like a disgruntled member of the United Nations from the 80s or 90s.  Clearly it’s a stupid desire, as i possess MINIMAL mechanical ability to fix these on my own, and them being european; i am virtually guaranteed things going wrong……..but regardless, the desire lives on…and i can’t get rid of it.

my top 5 ‘cheap’ classic cars i want…….WHAT are you guys after? Do you already own a ‘modern’ classic euro car? any stories?

1. Audi 90 (B3): Not sure why i want these so much, but i think it stems from my experiences with one back in the year 2000, when i bought a used 1993 Volvo 850.  During my test drives, I had also driven a 1995 Audi 90 quattro….and i LOVED it…it was so much better than the Volvo.  But it was also $15k, i bought the Volvo for $9k.  I still have an eye out these days…looking for that old woman selling her 90 Quattro.  I’m hoping i can find a REALLY clean one for less than $2500…..unmodded, unabused…i think it’s possible.  It’d be fun to throw these around in the winter…and to use as a utility car….

2. Audi 4000 Quattro: While looking for Audi 90s, i started seeing these 4000s popping up….for cheap.  like $1500 for those weird 80s boxy Audis….with quattro.  They’re sort of like buying an Audi quattro coupe….but not really….Either way, they look very german, and i really dig em.  Similar to the 90, if i find an old couple selling their unabused 4000 quattro, i’ll be so tempted to buy one.

3. BMW 3-series E30: Yeah it’s all played out now, because every european car enthusiast knows about the $2000 E30 that you can find on craigslist, so now you have thousands of people looking for these E30s….but they really are a cool eurobox to pick up cheap and drive around for kicks; the biggest problem is how many people are looking for em……

4. Alfa Romeo GTV6: Such a cool car, i still remember one of my best friends in 3rd grade used to get dropped off by his mother in one of these….and i loved it then.  They look much smaller in real life now than i remember them to be back then…but they make a helluva noise still.  It’s tough to find a ‘cheap’ one in good condition, but i think it’s possible.  I know Brad from Automobiliac picked his up cheap….and it looks great.   An affordable way for an american to get a very cool Alfa Romeo for sure…(look at the one in the picture below; it is the HOTNESS)

5. VW Corrado: Another car i always wanted.  Unfortunately all the kiddies into VWs have bought lots of them, abused them, modded them poorly and distastefully, and most of the 2nd hand Corrados i see are quite broken.  Even more unfortunately, when i do find ‘clean’ Corrados…i’m pretty sure they WILL break soon after getting it anyways.  So it’s a car i look at, but i would NEVER buy unless i become trained as a mechanic, because they are always proned to breaking…..

MTM Audi S3 for sale in Michigan!

Auto Europe in Birmingham, Michigan (a few miles from where i grew up!) has a 2009 Audi S3 MTM for sale at the moment with less than 5,000 miles.  I have inquired about the car and it comes with a full factory warranty (or remainder of), and is priced at $49,000.

After IEDEI brought you an exclusive article about Horschaus/MTM bringing european RS models into the US, it seems that this one is a US-spec Audi A3 2.0T Quattro which has been officially been converted from Germany to S3-spec.  MTM offers such an S3 conversion, which upgrades everything from suspension to wheels (MTM Bimoto wheels! sweet) to exhaust and even down to the S3 trim (door sills, badges, etc.).

What you end up with is a 270+ hp equivelant to a euro spec Audi S3.  Not bad at all!  $49k isn’t a bad price either, considering that IF the S3 did ever make it to the US officially, it would likely start in the mid-$40k range anyway.

The only issues i find with this car is (A) DSG instead of a manual, and (B) those absurd decals on the car (which i’m sure can be removed).  Otherwise, quite a car….and I have minimal experience with DSG, so maybe I can learn to love it as others have.

Check out the photos below, and if you’re interested go to the Auto Europe website linked at the bottom of the post for lots more photos and some specs:

from Auto Europe’s website:

The vehicle was bought via the Audi European Delivery Program and picked up from the factory in Ingolstadt and sent to the nearby MTM facility.  The conversion work was completed and the vehicle was shipped to America.  This particular vehicle has been featured in several magazines and is a very rare vehicle.

Hmm….errr

I took this photo here in Brooklyn of a MKIV R32 parked on the street with a Quattro badge on the window, and Audi rings on the side.  I’m not sure what to really think of it.  The R32 DOES have a Quattro-like AWD system, and it also utilized the Audi-developed DSG gearbox (thanks for the correction, Bulgogibrothers!)—but it’s not an Audi!!! Debate…

Bizarre 1984 Audi 100 Coupe S ACCN video.

So from what i gather, this was a ‘film’ made by the Audi Coupe S Club Of The Netherlands about a gathering they had back in 1984.  The soundtrack is quite mad scientist, and the whole thing makes me laugh every time i see it…but the Coupes look pretty cool, in that weird grey 80s Europe sort of way….
