foto of the day. why am I behind the wheel of a Ferrari?

and which Ferrari?  How could this happen?

Many of you know I’m not really a fan of Ferraris……never was as a kid, and am still not today.  Without getting into the gory details of WHY I don’t like Ferraris much, I found it interesting sitting behind the wheel of this one —-as I actually quite liked the car.  Either way……it is worthy of a foto-of-the-day and had a nice Saturday spent in it being driven around random little out-of-city roads with the engine purring behind my overheated head.

See what happens when IEDEI sits inside a Ferrari?  The prancing horse logo starts to glow! ha.

Blame Ferrari.

An awful crash which just took out the #8 Toyota TS030 today in Le Mans.  A damn shame…..amateur privateers driving Ferraris ruining the LMP1 class race again this year.

Meantime, Toyota have done superb today—until this terrible accident.  Anthony Davidson is apparently OK after the accident.  The driver of the Ferrari is also OK.

Ferrari F12 is inspired by the Uterus.

Ever since I was confronted by the ungainly sight of the new Ferrari F12, i’ve been trying to remember just what that rear end reminds me of…and then all of a sudden, i remembered.  It looks like a Uterus with bilateral fallopian tubes and ovaries!!

The Ferrari version has very wide fallopian tubes, and unnaturally round ovaries; however the general architecture is simply uncanny.  Did you think nobody would notice, Pininfarina?

Exhibit A: Uterus

Exhibit B:  Ferrari F12

fotos of the day. vintage sebring/daytona

Nigel Smuckatelli has catalogued many of his photos from the 60s and 70s on his flickr page, and in his own words: “Most of my photos were taken as a college student who volunteered as a safety official at the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring in the late 60’s and early 70’s.”

He has literally thousands of photos on his page….a good percentage of them are photos he took, although mixed in there are also stock and obtained photos…..but well worth sifting through them…so make sure you follow the link above! Here are some of his original photographs i loved:

how Ferrari tried to make a Lamborghini…and failed.

Ferraris are boring.  This one is no different.  What is worse then seeing a ‘new’ Ferrari with publicity photos showing a “red” Ferrari.  Ugh.  Might as well dig out your beloved Backstreet Boys records and put on a cap with a “Polo” horse on it.  Ferraris are cheesy.  This one is no different.  A gimmick for the 80 year-old Millionaire who wants to impress their friends with a new Ferrari.  Well, Mr. 80-year-old-man-who-buys-your-friends; here is your new car! This time it is in AWD so you don’t crash and break one of your fragile hips!

Lamborghini should have proceeded with their plans to ‘renew’ the Espada a few years ago….and destroyed this.

Chris Harris on the Porsche 959 and Ferrari 288 GTO

Chris Harris is cool.  I generally enjoy his reviews.  This is a cool review of 2 cars which were ‘poster’ cars of the 80s…..the 959 interesting me much more….as the poster in my wall as a kid would testify…

8mm footage; Nurburgring 1966.

Got this from the great blog, Automobiliac.

Silent 8mm footage of the 1000km race at Nurburgring, filmed in 1966.  Sure there’s no sound, but watching this is like watching an action painting.  beautiful!

McLaren MP4-12C: how to build an unimaginative, ugly, and boring supercar.

The McLaren MP4 can do blahblahblahblahblah in blah.blah seconds.  It can reach a top speed of blahblahblahblahblah.  It has technology everywhere, including a blahblahblahblahblahblah….it is the successor to the legendary blahblahblahblahblah.

Don’t even care.  It’s so bland and painfully boring from every angle.  It looks like a rejected 90s build-your-own-supercar-kit-car.  Yeah you copied a Ferrari from the front, you copied the outline of an R8, and you tried add some Lamborghini-ness……BLAH BLAH BLAH.  blech.

Hey McLaren! YOU SUKZ AT DESIGN!  try again sometime…..

Blackbird makes some pretty great carbon fiber guitars, and now they’ve created a custom version of their Blackbird Rider guitar with Ferrari badges on it.  Pretty interesting. $1500.

inside the Pagani factory…

Pagani-098.JPG

Speedhunters were recently granted exclusive, in depth access to the magical world of Pagani. Pagani are undoubtedly one of only a few companies who can build a supercar that has some uniqueness, imagination, and outright charm (are you listening Ferrari?).  HORACIO PAGANI was the founder of Pagani and had been after the supercar dream for a long time—to finally have it realised in the form of the legendary Pagani Zonda.

Check out all the photos and the full article, very well written in 3 parts, on:

auto-union-type-d-auction.jpg

Bonham’s is gonna be auctioning this ultra rare 1938 Auto Union Type D in August….and the real question is whether it will break the recent 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa’s $12.9m record breaking sale last month.

Here’s hoping it does break the record….

the stunning Iso Grifo.

The most famous italian car driven with american balls was the DeTomaso Pantera (imo), however this must be one of the most beautiful; the Iso Grifo.  Produced between 1963 and 1974, and under the beautiful shell lies a heart of pure american muscle.  Corvette V8s ranging from 300 to 350hp.  This is as beautiful as any Maserati or Ferrari of the 60s or 70s, in my opinion—and was fast as hell as well.  In the 70s, the top speed of this badass was documented as 171 mph.

They’re rare as hell now, and are starting to fetch more and more money…but that won’t stop me from posting a few choice photos of the car i’m talking about now will it!

FREE Victory By Design: Making Of @ Apple iTunes

decadenet

I was rolling through Apple’s iTunes store today and noticed that a 20+ minute video outlining the Victory By Design series showing how the series is filmed and put together is available for a free download!

Firstly, this is a GREAT series. The cars they test and talk about are simply stunning. Alain De Cadenet is obviously very into these cars as well, and really exercises them through some beautiful mountain roads in the VBD series.

Apple iTunes is selling the various episodes from the series in their store for $15 a pop (much cheaper than the $26 they cost on DVD and more expensive than the $0 it costs on torrents)—however it might be worth it to get those episodes in high quality vs. the crappy quality versions found on torrents.

For now though, make sure you head over to iTunes and get the FREE Victory By Design: The Making Of in your library. The video is superb! Not alot of talking, but interesting insights into the show and most of all, some amazing footage of some amazing cars.
