Honestly now…

Well this ad is a bit of a farce now, as there are plenty of people who dream about getting a Mitsubishi Evo. Nissan, not so much.  If anything this ad is a reminder of how lackluster the 80s/early 90s were for affordable performance cars and how few options people had to finding one.   These days, If one cannot afford a new Porsche 911—there are  plenty of enjoyable automobiles one can buy to at least enjoy themselves—hell i’d have a Cayman R (as long as it’s PDK) or an Audi TT-RS (as long as it’s DSG) over a 911, so even Porsche realised they could do better.

sighting of the day. track day 911s.

I was bumbling along in my rental Civic (yes i am still driving rental cars while the A3 gets fixed), and spotted these 2! Nice combination to see together being transported on trailers for what seems to be a track day exercise—not too common of a sighting in Queens, NYC.

Rally De Monte Carlo Historique: break them in!

These are some great photos from Rusty Nail Society, showing the raw and unfiltered side of classic cars being put through their paces at the Rally De Monte Carlo Historique——scarred and super cool.   If only more automotive photography showed the real side of cars rather than the overpolished, overwaxed, shiny farce which is known popularly as automotive photography!

Homevideo: 1967 European delivery of a Porsche 912.

This is such a fantastic home video, of a man named George taking a trip to Stuttgart to pick up his (then new) Porsche 912 from the factory!  The authenticity of this video is just great.  George is seemingly still an active member of the 912 community and still has his 912—-45 years later.  He states it has 175k miles on it and that it was a daily driver for 15 years.

Thanks to Dan for the tip on this video:

Head here to read George’s words about taking this delivery 45 years ago HERE

Vintage Porsche factory pics.

These are beautiful, taken in 1972.  I happened to stumble across these as I was searching for the source for a different Porsche factory photo I had posted a long time ago.  Happy accident!

Porsche: 24 hours at the Limit

Since I AM too lazy to actually get my Petit Le Mans photos together (i will try to do some on this fine Sunday)—–Porsche has posted some great photos on their Facebook page entitled “24 Hours At The Limit” in a few different galleries.  These photos are comprised of choice photoraphs from the 24 Hours @ Nurburgring  and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Porsche 911 (991) official pics.

I don’t like the rear end—-what is going on with the rear end? the rest looks very 997-ish, just a bit longer and taller in the rear.  Not sure what the source of these photos are, as I haven’t seen them anywhere else….but thanks to Jyoteen for sharing them!

IEDEI’s 5 best looking cars on sale today.

Yes these are all expensive. Yes they are all on sale now in the US market.  Yes, most of them are german.  Yes, you could have probably predicted these a mile away if you know anything about me.  Yes, I think they’re all badass and I want them all!

Here is my current list (in no order, really).

Aston Martin AMV8/V8 Vantage: I still think it’s the best looking sports car around, perfectly proportioned, small in size, and just beautiful from any angle.  Just classic.

Audi A7: I used to think the Maserati Quattroporte was the best looking sedan in the world, until i saw an Audi A7 parked NEXT to a Quattroporte in California—-and the A7 trumped it in pretty much every way.  Amazing and just drop dead gorgeous.

Porsche 911 (997): After the bulbous 993 and the weird 996, Porsche really hit their stride with the 997.  Of course a brand new 991 is coming next year, which should show the 911 growing in size and stature—however i’m pretty sure the 997 will be valued for years to come, as most Porsches are after they stop production.

Audi R8: I have seen an R8 side by side with the Gallardo, and hand-over-heart-put-my-Audi-fanboy-tendencies-aside, it is a much cooler looking design than the Lambo ever was. The R8 has a much taller greenhouse, and somewhat of an awkward stance, but somehow it works very well with its bulgy curves, look-at-me sideblade, and big grinning mouth.  The car looks much more sinister, grounded, and menacing in real life than it does in any photograph

AND where the shit hits the fan…

Porsche Panamera:  I love the Panamera.  It is a stunning design which has grown on me consistently with every passing month.  I started off wondering how they could f*ck up the car so bad, and then suddenly found myself looking at it thinking “do i actually like it?” to now feeling that it is simply the most aggressive and creative interpretation of what a Porsche ‘sedan’ should be.  Yes it is awkward, yes it is not nearly as chiseled and pretty as an A7, yes it is a bit over the top, yes it is weird—but it’s so uncool that it is savagely cool!

foto of the day. 911SC

I’m really growing fond of this generation of late 70s/early 80s 911s…especially the SC.  Undervalued, great engines, and very well made.  While the world stays obsessed with late 60s/early 70s 911s—-i feel that this generation is quietly lurking in the background—-and actually may represent a better car in almost every way.

video of the day. vintage rallycross.

Somebody posting a ‘newer’ rallycross video reminded me of these older Rallycross videos available….this one has an A110  vs. a Stratos in the 1978 European championship!  Epic cool.

the best looking 1988 911 you will ever see.

The owners of early 70s 911s who try to make their cars look ‘modern’ should be imprisoned.  This guy, on the other hand has done the glorious thing and ‘backdated’ his 1988 911 into a 1971 Porsche 911 with upgraded parts and spec’d out.

The result is something which is quite simply…..wonderful.

Steve McQueen’s Porshe 911s heads to auction.

Cooler than f*ck.  Wonder how much this is going to fetch on auction.  Yes, this is the 911S from the opening scene of Le Mans and yes this is the 911s that Steve McQueen bought after filming the movie for his own collection.

foto of the day. cool or too much?

Yes i am in the midst of loving 911s.  Especially 997s and 60s/70s models.  This attempts to join those two worlds…..unclear whether i support this or not, however i am enjoying the photo of a 997 with Martini livery!

It is a modified 997 Turbo called “EVT700” and here’s where you can read the article in GTPorsche about the car…
