Drivers Republic has posted a brilliant 2-part video, of a vintage rally Porsche 911 rally car flying through snowy paths. It’s dreamy, and as usual—a very well done D*R* video.

I’ve long been an admirer of Futurist art —it was truly punk ahead of its time. It offended many, was overstated, full of creativity, offensive, but in many ways gorgeous in its honesty, boldness, and artistic integrity.
Balla had originally written the founding manifestos of the Futurist Movement, in which #4 out of 10 was:
“We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing automobile with its bonnet adorned with great tubes like serpents with explosive breath … a roaring motor car which seems to run on machine-gun fire, is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace”
an inspiring piece of writing for the 1920s i gotta say….accompanied by this tangential, interesting, and cryptically simple piece of art entitled “The Speed Of The Automobile” (translated into english…)

My friend Matteo from Switzerland has a great site called Swiss Car Sightings where he takes some great pictures of cars he sees at gatherings, around Switzerland, around the rest of europe—along with photos of some of his great cars. Among his great cars is the 964 featured in these photos along with an older 911 and the newest 997 C4S. I could analyze and look at these pics all day marking the evolution patterns….

Readied for the FIA GT4 Cup, in which participants are generally privately held and run teams using lightly modified/tweaked street cars on the track, Maserati has introduced that GT MC ‘race’ version of the Granturismo S road car.
I wasn’t font of the Granturismo when it was first launched, but it’s really grown on me these days!

So with no traction control, this so called “twilight racing” that F1 is doing to appeal to a wider European audience ended up in shambles at the Malaysian GP. After 31 laps, Jenson Button took 1st place—-as the safety car came out and the race was soon stopped. I can’t help but think that F1 really set up a race like this to be flawed from the beginning. First of all, F1 is doing a fantastic job at alienating the rest of the world, while only catering to “europe”…..and then leading to a total rain out, and a shunted race finish.

1971, to be more specific. Isn’t it amazing how far NASCAR has fallen? I can’t even bear to watch it anymore….full of country music, cowboy hats, media, music videos, cheesy collage videos—–the horror of it all. I grew up watching NASCAR on those weird lonely saturday afternoons in the early-mid 80s, I remember rooting for Richard Petty, because he had the coolest looking car, a blue and red #43 Pontiac Grand Prix! fantastic.
Maybe one day NASCAR will come back to being cool again, maybe when carmakers don’t just tack on those cheesy ‘shells’ of production cars on top of em…maybe when it gets it soul back….if it ever does.
The ITV Formula One commentator, James Allen, has a fantastic blog with thorough insights and inside stories into the Formula One teams, races, drivers, and developing storylines. A highly recommended read for any F1 fan and a worthy bookmark!
Lots of people come up with lots of theories about how to watch F1 races LIVE online. SpeedTV generally has terrible commentating, requires cable tv, and is on the whole a terrible option for F1-deprived US viewers. This year, BBC has taken over the F1 broadcast in the UK and they will surely do an amazing job at broadcasting the races. Still, these broadcasts are NOT available in the USA…..til now….
So where can you watch the race? on BBC? I’ve got the answer.

Who would have thought that behind the clenched fists of the iron curtain, old school russians used to gather on the streets and partake in hardcore racing! No ads on the cars, the cars themselves didn’t have hardcore, hi-revving engines….they were basically street cars (mainly Ladas!) racing against each other, with drivers struggling to prove themselves in an isolated, communist society. I find these photos quite cryptic and mysterious—-but in a very cool way!
