Renault Icons: Alpine A110 videos.

alpine-a110-renault-icons

Renault TV posted these official videos in celebration of their history and the resurrection of the Alpine marque.  Car videos are mostly uninspiring, materialistic nonsense–but these Alpine A110 videos are out of this world….maybe because the car is out of this world?

Best part….it’s in English!  So my rudimentary and primitive French translation doesn’t have to be challenged like it normally does with Alpine videos.

video(s) of the day. 928 promo.

This is such a great ‘period’ documentary/commercial issued by Porsche about their new 928.  Obviously Porsche had grand hopes regarding the 928 when it was launched, and was touted within the company as the successor to the Porsche 911—–obviously we all know how that turned out!

That’s not to say that the 928 was not successful—-because it was successful as a front-engined sports car.   I have to say as a kid, i think i loved the 928 more than i loved the 911 of that era (early 80s).  The 928 had the most wicked rear end, and had a lot of presence on the road—-whereas the early 80s 911 had big bumpers and looked sort of like a cartoon.   Fast forward to 2012, I think the 911 of that era has aged quite well (maybe because it is timeless?) whereas the 928 looks like it is trapped in the time of that era.

Either way—–enjoy this video presented in 4 parts.  It has nice features, including lots of people with moustaches and/or mullet-y hair!

foto of the day. Bonnet.

the 1962 Rene Bonnet Djet—-mid-engined (one of the first mid-engined production cars, along with the 550 spider), and essentially what would evolve into Matra Djet afterwards.  Mid engined and super cool.

Interestingly enough, Matra (plastics/industrial company) was not even involved with this car as it was developed, however supposedly bought Bonnet in 1963/1964 after Rene Bonnet (developer of the Djet and race car driver) hit financial trouble— and then Matra evolved the Djet into a street going sports car.

Bugatti Type 101 Antem Coupe

The last ‘original’ Bugatti (referring to the original family run company) to be produced was the Type 101 and one of these 101s went to coachbuilder Antem and was transformed into something weird and somewhat charming.  The Bugatti T101 Antem Coupe is an unusual looking design, smothered in mystery and uniqueness.  In those days, plenty of ‘one-off’ cars existed, but the significance of this being of the final 8 cars Bugatti ever built before disappearing and being resurrected by an amped-up Volkswagen make this car even more interesting than it already is, in my opinion.

Only eight Type 101s were ever built. The chassis 101 504 would then be sent to Antem of Paris and become the unique Type 101 C Antem Coupé, arguably the most striking and beautiful Type 101.

1000th post.

Hard to believe that after 2 years & 11 months, this is the 1000th post for the IEDEI Blog.  I thank everyone who comes here once in a while to check out the site, and for the cool people i’ve met and spoken with over e-mail about automobiles, motoring, lifestyle, and cool stuff.

I started IEDEI because I felt i thought too much about cars and wanted to share some stuff with people—-not much has changed, and I hope to continue sharing stuff and finding more great stuff from other people.

cheers & and thanks for staying in touch,

Alpines at Le Mans. (videos)

These are just some amazing videos…..everytime i see the race-prepped Alpine screaming down regular streets as shown in the 1963 video, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! even though we can’t hear them, they just look epic cruising with regular traffic.   Some wonderful behind-the-scenes footage in this videos as well, of the construction and of the founder of Alpine, Jean Redele.

video heaven…for me.  my broken french skills help me understand some of these…..as they are both in french.

Take a tour of the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

As expected, MB has constructed a damn cool museum to display alot of their motorsports and production car history.  Here are some of the pics presented by the company to highlight their new museum.  You can tour the museum virtually on their website as well.  Easier than getting a flight out to Stuttgart!

stillborn bull: 1974 Lamborghini Bravo

lamborghini_bravo

This was due to be the replacement for the Lamborghini Urraco, however it was launched to the world as a concept in 1974 by Bertone, however the global economy was slumping, fuel costs were rising, and Ferrucio Lamborghini was retiring.  From what i’ve read, there is widespread reporting that this Bravo was tested heavily prior to its introduction (40,000+ miles), but unfortunately it never made it to production.  3.0L engine pumping 300hp through a small, relatively light body and short wheelbase.  Smaller, lower, and shorter than the Countach, it definitely ‘borrowed’ some ideas from the Countach.

It looks like Lamborghini would have definitely had an amazing rival to the Ferrari Dino, had they have made this…..

Word is, you can still see the car at the Bertone Museum in Turin, Italy.

video: History of Volvo

Very cool 10 minute video outlining the history of Volvo motorcars.  I know that voice, just can’t remember the guy’s name—-he does alot of the old F1 narrative videos…..Some interesting classic footage in this well made company video.

Audi book: “A History of Progress”

bentley_gah2_cv_large

I picked up this book yesterday at the VW/Audi Waterfest event, directly from the booth that Bentley Publishers had.  around 300 pages, with ALOT of vintage photographs detailing the history of Audi.  Really great stuff, and alot of text outlining the history of Audi as a company; dating back to the original and early cars under separate brands.

The photos are all in monotone blue-white tint, however it adds a sense of unity between all the photos i find.  This is the 2nd edition, published in 2003 updated through the year 2000.  Definitely worth checking out if you’re an Audiphile like I am.  $39 available directly from Bentley

This is one of the coolest and most beautifully made webpages on the the net….it’s nothing new, they launched this sometime in the last couple of years.  But it’s truly a great read, with lots of info about the race, the cars, and including some great photos.
