A220 V8 prototype.

This thing is out of this world.  Quite honestly one of the most stunning race cars i’ve ever seen.  One of 2 surviving Alpine A220 V8 prototypes developed, but never raced.  On display now at Retromobile 2013.   Currently privately owned, according to Renault Classic.

supercar of the day. Mangusta.

one of the most evil, rare, influential, and fascinating supercars ever….the DeTomaso Mangusta (1966-1971)

401 Mangustas were built, about 200 of the european version, with 4 headlamps and Ford 289 Cu.In. engine, and the rest are USA version, with 2 “pop up” headlamps and less powerful Ford 302 engines. One car was built with Chevrolet engine. There are reported to be fewer than 120 left in existence, according to the 2 available registry databases.

eBay eye: ’71 Lancia Fulvia Zagato.

Definitely don’t see many of these on sale in the US market…and this one looks pretty great…if only I had some loot burning a whole in my pocket, i’d get in on one of my all-time favourite Lancias.

stillborn bull: 1974 Lamborghini Bravo

lamborghini_bravo

This was due to be the replacement for the Lamborghini Urraco, however it was launched to the world as a concept in 1974 by Bertone, however the global economy was slumping, fuel costs were rising, and Ferrucio Lamborghini was retiring.  From what i’ve read, there is widespread reporting that this Bravo was tested heavily prior to its introduction (40,000+ miles), but unfortunately it never made it to production.  3.0L engine pumping 300hp through a small, relatively light body and short wheelbase.  Smaller, lower, and shorter than the Countach, it definitely ‘borrowed’ some ideas from the Countach.

It looks like Lamborghini would have definitely had an amazing rival to the Ferrari Dino, had they have made this…..

Word is, you can still see the car at the Bertone Museum in Turin, Italy.

IEDEI vs. Toyota Prius (Round 2): extincting rare metals.

Toyota-Prius

My quest to reduce the popularity of the Toyota Prius continues.  Hybrids are not without harm, in fact they cause their OWN sort of damage.  Here is further evidence, as the manufacturing of Hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prion…err…Prius is leading to depletion of rare, earch metals.  In their mad scramble for these metals required for the manufacturing of their cars, companies like Toyota are simply walking over and/or stepping over whatever or whomever it takes to keep their piece of the pie.

Hybrid FAIL….again.

concept car wasteland: 1955 Cadillac La Salle Roadster.

55cadillac_lasalle_ii_2

The Cadillac XLR is probably the worst example of Cadillac trying to build its own Corvette…it’s merely an overpriced, overstyled, old-man example of a Corvette.  I’m not sure why ANYONE would buy one.

Back in 1955, Cadillac had a go at reviving the “La Salle” nameplate that they had stopped producing back in 1941.  What they came up with were 2 models, a sedan and a roadster.  The roadster is very interesting, a low slung, strangely designed, overly complex, italian-looking design with some pretty cool design features.  It looks about the size of an original Corvette, and even has some similar proportions—however i think it actually looked much cooler than those early Corvettes.  Harley Earl was in charge of this project as well….and its destiny was solely confined to the concept car wasteland!

This car was sent to the junkyard to be destroyed…..but apparently a man in Michigan FOUND the car there, and has plans to restore it.

Concept Car Wasteland: 1969 Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF Competizione by Ghia

This is a new feature to the IEDEI blog—“Concept Car Wasteland”. This is where we’ll introduce you to a concept (obscure, hopefully), which you had no idea existed.

Here, we love the original Lancia Fulvia from the 60s….and I hope to own one, one day! In 1969, Ghia decided to present a concept version of the Fulvia with their own design cues and deemed it a special version, known as the Competizione. Never seen again since it’s original introduction….this car bears little resemblence to the Fulvia we all know and love—-but definitely has some Lamborghini cues, as well as maybe some Maserati and Alfa Romeo ones as well. Looks very italian nonetheless, and looks very much from the late 60s as it should i suppose!
