BMW 5-series generations.

I can’t really be arsed to write about the current leakage of photos regarding the ‘NEW” BMW 5-Series…..because it’s boring.

What I do know, is that previous generations of 5-series have NOT been boring.  My absolute favourites are the first 2 (E12 and E28). Thus the most exciting part of the press release is actually the photo of ALL the 5-series generations together! Good wallpaper for you cuckoo 5-series fans.

Cadillac finally goes weird and interesting.

The last TRULY interesting design that Cadillac made was in the shape of those bizarre and strange early 1980s Sevilles.  I know, because my father had one back in the day.  PINK with dark red velvet.  Oh the horrors of pure luxury….but i loved that car when i was a kid.  Mainly because it had so many cool digital things on the inside.

The CTS-V is fast…blah blah blah blah…but super boring.  I guess that was the point.  but THIS! it actually looks interesting, and they’re calling it the CTS Coupe.

from Motor Authority:

At launch, the CTS Coupe will only be available with GM’s 3.6-liter direct injected V-6, which is good for 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque and an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 27 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the city. A 6-speed manual transmission comes fitted as standard, while a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters for pseudo manual control is offered as an option.

Future Honda S2000?

The Honda S2000 is dead.  I’ve got a sneaking feeling that it WILL be back quite shortly, in altered and new form of course.  These are some interesting renderings from Grid/3dLuvr about a possible idea.  Note that they have a striking similarity to the outgoing model, however it’s all tweaked up with added styling cues.  Reminds me alog of the MB Gullwing that was debut’d recently…

the resurrection of De Tomaso!

Autoweek is reporting that a 79 year-old former FIAT executive named Gian Mario Rossignolo is plotting to bring back the legendary De Tomaso name. Apparently he purchased the rights to the name from a bankruptcy court in Italy recently.

The launch lineup will consist of a crossover (????), a luxury sedan, and a coupe starting in 2011.  Yeah, it doesn’t sound all that promising by words, but here’s hoping they ditch the sedan and crossover idea and concentrate on coming up with a cool sports car for consumption.

Based on a VW?? Sounds like another 914, to me….

porsche_356

Motor Authority seems to think it’s gonna happen, and they think it’ll be 356-ish….i think it’s all false.

the hotness: Singer 911

Singer_911_front

Singer Vehicle Design take older 911s from 1969 to 1989 and refresh them into something completely unique and amazing.  This is a complete ‘refresh’ process which targets the appearance of those early 911 RSRs and Carrera RS from the late 60s/early 70s.  In actuality, i gotta say that the Singer 911 almost looks better than those originals.

according to them:

“The Singer 911 is no mere imitation, clone or retro-hot rod, but a re-interpretation and rebirth of theearly performance-focused 911’s. The new vehicle is the result of a fusion between the purity of the original 911 and modern materials, design, and updated technologies, and aftermarket experience into a unique sports car that recaptures the essence of the early 911’s golden age. The Singer 911 capitalizes on the 40 years of solutions and enhancements that have resulted from the racing aftermarket’s embracing the original 911. Borrowing the best elements from the air/oil cooled 911’s long production span such as the “chic” of the long hood pre-’74 race specials, and the engineering durability of the later cars from the 80’s and 90’s, Singer Vehicle Design capitalizes on the vast know how and evolutionary advances the original 911 has enjoyed. The experience offered by the new Singer 911 is a passionate celebration of the history making, iconic 911, and creates an enhanced sportscar that honors the original 911’s soul.”

Introducing: the Bugatti 16c Galbier

Finally, we have a glimpse of the newest, over-the-top amazing Bugatti.

8 tail pipes, a split-opening hood, insane chrome bodywork, a split line in the front windshield, a swooping rear end reminiscent of an old Bugatti Atlantic, Veyron-esque styling cues, Bentley-like size, and an insanely evil front headlight which reminds me of that weird old horror film The Car.

As usual with Bugatti—-it is completely insane. 800hp insane.  It’s got a W16 (similar to the one in the Veyron, but detuned) under the hood.  I’m assuming it is AWD.  Just take a bloody look at it will yer!! And watch the VIDEO at the end.

Here are the special ‘refinished” IEDEI photos of the new Bugatti 16c Galibier:

Porsche releases photos of the Ltd. Edition “Sport Classic”

Porsche_911_Sport_Classic_old_carrera_rs

Obviously the people in charge of naming this ‘new’ version weren’t exactly scientists in creativity, and it ALMOST sounds like they must have fired the guy responsible for naming it the day before; thus eliminating any chance of a proper name.  Either way, Porsche have decided that there must be 250 people dumb enough to put down $250,000+ on what can basically only be described as a Carrera S with 20-25 extra HP and ‘special’ modern interpretations of the original 70s Carrera RS Fuchs wheels.

My solution? Buy a regular Carrera S for $80k.  Buy the vinyl decals for a few hundred dollars, to get you those matte stripes……chip the engine to get you an extra 20hp (or more).  Pain the car whatever colour you want, even the aviator grey-like colour this one is in.  Buy the Pseudo-Fuchs wheels aftermarket.  You’re still under $100k…and you’ll look damn good doing it.  Skip on the polished steel lip though….i’d go solid black on the wheels.

MK6 GTI and New Scirocco in the flesh in the US

Went to Waterfest, a big VW & Audi event held out in Englishtown, NJ—where to my surprise, i finally found a glimpse of the new Scirocco in the flesh! It’s a great design, very clean and low slung.  Of course I would have preferred to see it without all the Forge stickers; but i’m not complaining.  I wish VW would bring this over….

They also had the new MK6 GTI at the show, which also looked great—a big improvement on the slightly weird MK5 GTI.  This, however, is surely coming to the US for around the same price as the last one.  Looks great, i’m sure it’ll drive great.

BMW 635csi vs. 645ci…generations.

I used to hate the new 6-series when it first came out, but these days i really am quite fond of it…..Bangle made me a believer!  The original 6-series was a true classic though, and it’s nice to see a pic of them together.  I wish they were the same colour though……

Maserati introduces the Granturismo MC

1291_granturismo20mc20-2021

Readied for the FIA GT4 Cup, in which participants are generally privately held and run teams using lightly modified/tweaked street cars on the track, Maserati has introduced that GT MC ‘race’ version of the Granturismo S road car.

I wasn’t font of the Granturismo when it was first launched, but it’s really grown on me these days!

From the days when NASCAR had soul……

633-vijpg

1971, to be more specific.  Isn’t it amazing how far NASCAR has fallen? I can’t even bear to watch it anymore….full of country music, cowboy hats, media, music videos, cheesy collage videos—–the horror of it all.  I grew up watching NASCAR on those weird lonely saturday afternoons in the early-mid 80s, I remember rooting for Richard Petty, because he had the coolest looking car, a blue and red #43 Pontiac Grand Prix! fantastic.

Maybe one day NASCAR will come back to being cool again, maybe when carmakers don’t just tack on those cheesy ‘shells’ of production cars on top of em…maybe when it gets it soul back….if it ever does.

Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA & Alfa Romeo GTAM video…

There’s a new promo video out for the brand new Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA, which features an original Alfa Romeo GTAM going against it on a track.  It’s amazing just how HUGE the MiTo GTA looks in this video, compared to the tiny GTAM.  Might i remind you that MiTo is not a large car by any means…it is currently the smallest car Alfa sells—just goes to show you how different standards are now in cars relating to size, etc…

It’s a very cool little car though, the MiTo GTA….a throwback to the old school Alfa Romeos.  Small and quick, with lots of attitude.  I hope Fiat & Chrysler go through with this planned merger…and the MiTo GTA gets over here.

Camaro Vs. Camaro.

I was born and raised in Detroit. I know what an original late 60s Camaro is supposed to look like, and while Chevrolet can desperately try to associate this new 2010 Chevy Camaro as a throwback to the original, it is clearly NOT a clone of the original.

The recent release of the Dodge Challenger, was a blatant style tribute to the original 197o Challenger, although as previously discussed on IEDEI—not an especially accurate or interesting design job.

The 2010 Chevy Camaro is a robotic, hi-tech, warped, twisted, version of the original Chevy Camaro.  I know for a fact (from people who work close to GM), that when this Camaro was designed as a concept a few years ago for the North American International Auto Show—its conception was rushed and pushed out to the public without putting much care into the design. Fortunately for GM, the design was successful with the Auto Show crowd—–the same sad crowd who wait in lines to sit in cars like the Dodge Avenger. Not really the crowd you want telling you what to put in production, is it?

Either way, the new car will sell by the bucketloads, and for Detroit’s sake—i do hope GM recover from their dire puddle they’re sitting in at the moment. I hope it shakes them up, and they stop producing rubbish cars and get back to the glory of the 50s and 60s.
