A110-50 in detail and production Alpine coming to 2012 Paris Auto Show.

I fell hard for the Renault Alpine A110-50 Concept  introduced on May 25th at the Monaco Grand Prix.  Here are some fantastic close-up detail shots of the concept, confirming that the level of detail is just beautiful on it.  From the success of the concept, it appears we are going to see some sort of a production Alpine concept at the Paris Auto Show in the Autumn.  I’m really not sure how finished of a product we may see—however i’m quite confident based on people i’ve spoken to that there will be something on display at the Paris show resembling a production Alpine, at least in concept form.

50 years ago, Jean Redele introduced the production Alpine A110 at the 1962 Paris Auto Show.  Renault is going to do something similar with a production, street-version of the A110-50.  As usual, IEDEI will be ahead of the game when it comes to publishing news about it!

Pal-V: Sir, your flying car has arrived.

Yes I want one. I wonder what my 3 hours a day of commuting through NYC would look like with this bad boy! Just don’t put any large trees in my way, alright Winston?

This thing is going to go into production—-well at least that’s what they say in the video below:

Triumph GT6 (1966-1973).

Another week—-another car to discover and appreciate!  I’ve always had a huge soft spot for Triumphs, ever since growing up next to a neighbour who kept a very nice racing green TR6.  The Michelotti-designed Triumph GT6 had a design which was inspired by Le Mans class winning Triumph Spitfires of 1965.  The production Spitfire had been a successful road car, and this was its’ coupe variant.  In the glory days of British Leyland, of course (ahem)—-the GT6 was produced in three different generations, culminating finally in the MK3.

I’d never actually paid attention enough to distinguish the GT6 in the past from its Spitfire roadster counterpart—-but now that I take a good look at it; it really does have some classic design to it.  Somewhere in there, i see a poor man’s Aston or E-type….and a rich man’s MGB GT.  Nonetheless, i’ve added it to my short list of lustworthy british motors to roll after.

Last but not least….this glorious photo of the original racing Spitfires (which inspired the design of the GT6) at the 1965 Le Mans next to an Alpine M63! Just superb.

Chevy 130R.

I can’t remember the last time I actually liked a Chevy—–i think i may be able to trace this to 1990 and my childhood admiration of the Cavalier Z24! ha.

Anyways, Chevy have introduced 2 concepts at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show—–one of which, the 140s is kinda worthless (and ugly)—–but one of them (130R) is strikingly good looking!  Although there is a lot borrowed from the BMW 1-series upon first glance, i find that the stance and size of this RWD concept is basically how I envision the ‘modern pony car’.  Since Dodge has re-introduced the (forgettable) Dodge Dart—–maybe it’s time Chevy brings back the Nova! Or not….

There’s something pleasantly retro about this design, and at the same time progressive. I think i feel the same way about the previous generation 1-series; a car I’ve always loved in coupe design.

130R:

Of course Chevy just had to ruin all the fun by putting a $75 interior in it! terrible.

VW Up!

I am a huge fan of small euro hatchbacks.  They are fun to drive, practical, and get the job done!  Since the original Beetle and Golf, VW have struggled to come up with a cheap, useable, attractive car that can be used by the masses.  I have to say that my experiences with the euro VW Polo were impressive, and i think the Polo is a great car—–but still not ‘common’ enough to make a global impact.  I am gonna hope that the new Up! gets the job done.  Why?  It is a 3-cylinder rear-engined 4-seat hatchback.  Back to the glory days of VW, innit?  It doesn’t look ‘charming’ like the original Beetle, but times have changed—-i stand corrected—-it is not rear-engined any more!  However this Up! does come with a nice, clean, minimalist design.   It remains to be seen if this car makes it over here.  At a starting price of 8500 Euros, the Up! will surely make an impact IMO.

This is how you make a cool subcompact, Fiat—-not an overpriced, overstyled piece of crap!  I just wish VW would have stuck to the rear-engined format.

lost concept of the day. Porsche-VW Tapiro

An Italdesign study penned by Guigiaro in 1970.   It seems every photo I find of the strange Tapiro is accompanied by women!  So here they are in all their early 70s glory.  This car is actually based off a 914 chassis, interestingly enough.

Audi mulling over building the neu quattro!

BUILD IT! put me on the list!

“Describing the new two-door as more than just a one-off show car, Stefan Reil, head of development at Audi’s Quattro Gmbh division, confirmed plans for a limited production run were fairly advanced. “We are rethinking standard processes to make it possible,” he said. “We know how to engineer it already.”

Bugatti 16c Galibier: 2013 production

the good folks over at Bugatti Passion are reporting that the supersedan 16c Galibier has received a green light to go into production in 2013.  Supposedly the Veyron ends its production in 2012.  Whether there will be a “GT” version of the Veyron pushing 1300hp (!!!) is still a question mark….but the signs point towards it being a possibility!

The price of the next Bugatti supersedan? $1.4 milion.  I’ll wait for the CPO one on discount, thanksverymuch.

Saab Aero X…production?

It’s an exciting time for SAAB in IEDEI’s opinion.  They get a fresh start, under a native Swedish company, with alot of press in the last 6-12 months and only one way to go: UP.

The CEO of SAAB-SPYKER has been hinting that the Saab Aero X Concept (2006) could get built, even saying “it deserves to be built”.  Motor Authority are reporting there may be an increasing chance it does get based, possibly on the existing Spyker Aileron platform.  As a concept, it was definitely a stunning example of SAAB design….and what better way to relaunch the company than to make a statement.

GO ON THEN! Build it!

Take a tour of the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

As expected, MB has constructed a damn cool museum to display alot of their motorsports and production car history.  Here are some of the pics presented by the company to highlight their new museum.  You can tour the museum virtually on their website as well.  Easier than getting a flight out to Stuttgart!

VW board murders the Cayenne and Panamera…

2008_Porsche_Cayenne_ext_1 copy

porsche-panamera copy

…and simultaneously gives Porsche a big kick in the nuts.

I love Porsches, and i’ve wanted one ever since I was a kid; I guess i would be joined by MOST men in saying that Porsches are the holy grail of motoring for alot of us.  But in the last several years, the 911 has been desirable; however Porsche as a brand has become impure, commercialized, and devoid of the ‘purity’ character it used to carry.

The Cayenne has always been a royal waste of space.  It is truly a rebadged VW Touraeg, whether one wants to believe it or not.  It is also ugly as sin, driven primarily by women who don’t give a damn about driving dynamics, and was perfectly molded for a nice parking spot in front of a Starbucks to collect an afternoon latte more than actual driving…

The Panamera is a Porsche designing FAIL.  There really is no other way to look at the car.  I don’t care how fast it is, how good it is, or how much technical achievement it has…..Porsches were never made to be 4-doors (aside from special projects like the Audi-Porsche RS2 Avant)….and If Porsche recently became so keen to produce the Panamera, then they have really lost the plot.

So it seems the Cayenne and Panamera will continue until 2016, when their current run will end—-and they will both end! Discontinued!

BRAVO VW BOARD!! Maybe you will sort out Porsche by cracking them a kick in the nuts for their recent failures…..and maybe you can tell Koeniggsegg to sort out Saab while you’re at it!
