BMW M1 “Procar” series

Firstly, apologies for the lack of updates on the IEDEI Blog lately—-i have been battling a lack of time attributed to my job (i do have another job y’know!), but have no fear—-there is plenty of content waiting to unfold here with due time.  I still owe you all a big Petit Le Mans report—-which is still being curated.

The BMW M1 was specifically created for racing—–and it has to be one of the coolest production race cars built.  It’s unfortunate BMW strayed from this path, and has yet to produce anything to even remotely put up a show against the mighty Audi R8.  Hopefully one of these days, they’ll come to their senses—-and build ‘another’ M1 or something of the same caliber.

Meanwhile, here are some grand photos of the mighty BMW M1 in racing glory

back from the 2011 Petit Le Mans…

All i can say is that I was blown away.  Where to begin?  Should i start with my driving of an R8 V10 Spyder around?  Or that I was in the Audi Sport Team Joest pits for 2 R18 pit stops?  Or that I was in heaven sitting at the track side at night watching some of the greatest race cars in the world go thundering just feet away from me?  Or that I met some of my favourite drivers?  I had a total blast.

More to come about the event, with photos….later this week.  I have so many photos to rummage through.

Oh, and the R18 TDI is even cooler up close!

IEDEI going to Petit Le Mans.

The race is this Saturday—-in Atlanta, Georgia, and IEDEI-Audiphile will be there in full force with the Audi corral in the hospitality suite starting from Friday!  This is my first attending of an endurance race, and i’m damn excited to see my favourite race car (Audi R18 TDI) battle it out with Peugeot!  Expect plenty and lots of pics on Audiphile and here on IEDEI.

slow week.

I started a new job towards the end of last week—-and my time has been quite consumed over the past week.  Apologies for little to no IEDEI updates.  To make it up to you, here is a megapost with plenty of things which have been consuming my daydreams all week.

cheers—Syed

EVT 700 at night.

i had posted back in December about the Porsche 911 EVT700 and it’s mad over the top livery treatment—–but here’s that same car parked in London.  I have to say—–it is absurd, attention whore-ish, and a bit vulgar—-but i like it.

racing livery art.

my friend Bradley over at Automobiliac recently went to the Pebble Beach Concours and Monterey Historic races—-and took some great livery-only photographs.

To me, bar none, the greatest 911 in history if the 911R.  No other 911 even comes close.  The “pretender” to the throne is the Carrera RS—-so here’s a beautiful picture with a 911R in the foreground, and a Carrera RS  (edit: I actually think that is an RS-R, not an RS) in the background.

art of the day. vintage Elite manual.

I respect most Lotus models, but don’t really love them—-except the original Elite! what a car.

This is a vintage Lotus Elite manual.

i can daydream….

and hell yeah i want that sequential gearbox.  the sound it makes while downshifting is just EPIC.

source of photo: http://www.autosportfoto.sk/

The driver is Tomas Liedl, driving the Slovakia Ring in a DTM-spec Audi TT-R.   I am guessing this is one of the original DTM TT-Rs that used to race in the DTM Series, having their careers continue…..this is what it looks like now, as opposed to the older Red/Silver Sport livery OR the Yellow Playstation livery.   There was also the blue Red Bull livery back in the day.  This race is from 08/21/2011.

Bugatti Type 252.

photo by Laurent Duchene (note: this is probably a replica, as the original car doesn’t have wire wheels)

This has to be my new favourite historical Bugatti.  Produced only as a prototype between 1957 and 1962, it was the ‘last’ Bugatti proposed by the original Bugatti company before it was sold and shut down for many years.  Apparently the car was proposed several times looking for investors to put it into proper production, however it never happened; apparently one ONE actual car exists, however the internet is flooded with photos of replicas.  The actual car is kept in French car museum.

I wish they would have made this car….it reminds me in many ways of the Porsche 550 in its size and purity of form.  Obviously it would have been more expensive than a 550 if it were produced, but it would have been lovely to see more of these around.    Not much information found online about the car—so much of its story has been kept low key.

more pics, gathered over time and some from mycarblog.org

(these are pics of the ORIGINAL car, belonging to the french museum in Mulhouse)

to follow up the video of the day, a classic pic of an Alpine A310, giving you an idea of its overenthusiastic wheel arches and over the top body kit—-but i still love it so!  this one is from 1978, if my notes are correct.

the best thing to ever come out of Ferrari…

Yeah I don’t give a crap about Ferrari—it’s a vulgar company who have built the most overrated, cheesy, and overhyped cars of my lifetime.  They’re like the ‘jocks’ of the automotive world…ready to strangle automotive journalists with their sweaty, annoying jockstraps.

BUT TODAY I read a statement by Luca Di Montezemelo (CEO of Ferrari) which made my heart turn all fuzzy and warm—although the statement involves Ferrari’s future plans, what warmed my heart is their resistance to join the overwhelming surge of electric cars.  My favourite marques Audi and Porsche have also recently joined into the electric car frenzy with their own projects; which has caused me a certain amount of interest to see what they’ve come up with, but a certain amount of disappointment at them selling out to the frenzy.

What did Mr. Di Montezemelo say?

“You will never see a Ferrari electric because I don’t believe in electric cars, because I don’t think they represent an important step forward for pollution or C02 or the environment.”

Very cool.  I’m glad someone had the balls to say it.  Too bad his next line was “But we are working very, very hard on a Hybrid Ferrari”…..oh well, i didn’t expect them to completely stray off the beaten path.

Audi racing veteran.

Quattroworld has a great feature about Don Istook and his long-time Audi racing history–including Ur quattros, S4s, and TTs–culminating recently in his delivery of the 1st North American TT-RS.   Fellow Audiphiles will surely appreciate the stories about his previous race cars that he built from the ground up, as well as some of his perspectives about these cars and experiences.

“Now, what I didn’t mention was that we got the truckload of parts on Friday…and we had to race Saturday morning!  Well, Rome wasn’t built in a day…but I WAS racing at Road Atlanta in the early 80’s when Jo helped out Tom Brennan, after Tom had written off one of the Porsche factory D Production 924’s.  Jo secured a brand new 924 D Production tub for Tom…had it shipped to the track…and that car WAS literally built in one day…made the DP race and finished 2nd!!  So, with that in mind…we got all the “stuff” put on the car and just made the grid for the start of the race.”
