Sauber C31: best looking new F1 car?

I haven’t for sure figured out why I think this is the best looking F1 car around, but on Monday, Sauber introduced their new C31 for this year’s F1 competition.  I think it’s something about the ‘steps’ right before the nose that really do it for me; remind me of the more straight-curve mixtures we used to see on F1 cars in the 70s.  The colours, the nose treatment, and those combinations of curves and straight edges really do it for me.

I know that the “look” of the F1 car is of less importance than all of the performance characteristics; but to someone who appreciates the design of race cars——this one hits the right buttons!

EDIT! I’ve just realised after careful examination that Ferrari also has a very similar design to their nose—–just executed with much poorer aesthetics (but likely better aerodynamics).  But you would expect that—-as it’s a Ferrari.

Lotus to enter LMP2 class at 2012 Le Mans

The GT class Lotus Evora with the Cosworth engine was one of THE best sounding cars I saw at the Petit Le Mans this past autumn……and i’m really pleased to see Lotus expanding their entry into the LMP2 level. Very exciting stuff indeed!

“The Kolles-run Kodewa squad will campaign two Lola B12/80s under the Lotus title, with Lotus-badged V8s from John Judd’s Engine Developments, which is also building the sports car maker’s IndyCar engine.

Lotus motorsport director Claudio Berro said the partnership was an ideal way for the group to take a step up the endurance racing ladder after returning to the GT class with the Evora last year.

“This is a very exciting step for us,” said Berro. “We made no secret of our intention to tackle LMP2 this year but it had to be done in the right way and we’re very happy with the setup with our partners. More than anything else, we’re looking forward to our return to Le Mans in this capacity after our success with the Evora last year.”

why can’t modern car magazines be this creative with their covers?  Instead they just put synthetic, advertising-like covers up.  Blah.

Motorsports 2011, by Jake Yorath.

2011 was a great year in motorsports—–and I personally had an epic time at Petit Le Mans this year, following one of the most heroic wins ever at Le Mans in france.  But aside from those glorious events—–DTM racing, GT racing, and endurance racing supplied thrills and spills this year.

Jake Yorath takes wonderful photos—and these were shared by him to remember motorsports in 2011

1974 Don Capasco Rally

Is there anything cooler than vintage Super8 rally footage? I doubt it!

Here’s the description of this video provided:

“In 1974 Australia’s first European-style special-stage rally was won rather fittingly by a 1973 Group 4 Alpine Renault A110, the first marque to win the World Rally Championship. The Alpine, Bernard Darniche’s Morocco-winning car, was driven to victory by 1970 Australian Rally Champion Bob Watson. This amateur movie, shot on Super-8 film and with the sound recorded on cassette tapes, has survived transfer to VHS tape, and now to a digital format. There are voice-over interviews with Bob Watson, Geoff Ross, the late Peter Brock, and Gerry Ball. The quality may not be the best, but this is an important part of the history of rallying in Australia.”

1970 BMW “3002” prototype

Here’s something I didn’t know about—-in 1970, the BMW Werks team developed a weird concoction of part BMW 2002 and part E9 coupe and came up with the 3002. The car raced in one race, the 1970 Tour De Corse—-and the car still exists, although it’s in pretty ratty shape somewhere in California, according to someone who has seen it there.

Around 270hp with a 6 cylinder and weighing around 950 kg—–the car was surely a bit of an animal for the time.

RIP Dan Wheldon.

Dan Wheldon died today in a massive 15 car (of 34 cars racing) accident in during an IndyCar race in Las Vegas earlier this afternoon.  I salute him as a 2-time winner of the glorious Indianopolis 500 and a great driver.   Other drivers were also injured and are being treated at the hospital.  Racing has become so much safer in modern times, but this is a reminded that it’s still not immuned to catastrophe.

Following the accident, a red flag was introduced.  The race was then stopped for good. However, following the announcement, the drivers and teams decided to do a 5 lap tribute to him:

Porsche: 24 hours at the Limit

Since I AM too lazy to actually get my Petit Le Mans photos together (i will try to do some on this fine Sunday)—–Porsche has posted some great photos on their Facebook page entitled “24 Hours At The Limit” in a few different galleries.  These photos are comprised of choice photoraphs from the 24 Hours @ Nurburgring  and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

BMW M1 “Procar” series

Firstly, apologies for the lack of updates on the IEDEI Blog lately—-i have been battling a lack of time attributed to my job (i do have another job y’know!), but have no fear—-there is plenty of content waiting to unfold here with due time.  I still owe you all a big Petit Le Mans report—-which is still being curated.

The BMW M1 was specifically created for racing—–and it has to be one of the coolest production race cars built.  It’s unfortunate BMW strayed from this path, and has yet to produce anything to even remotely put up a show against the mighty Audi R8.  Hopefully one of these days, they’ll come to their senses—-and build ‘another’ M1 or something of the same caliber.

Meanwhile, here are some grand photos of the mighty BMW M1 in racing glory

back from the 2011 Petit Le Mans…

All i can say is that I was blown away.  Where to begin?  Should i start with my driving of an R8 V10 Spyder around?  Or that I was in the Audi Sport Team Joest pits for 2 R18 pit stops?  Or that I was in heaven sitting at the track side at night watching some of the greatest race cars in the world go thundering just feet away from me?  Or that I met some of my favourite drivers?  I had a total blast.

More to come about the event, with photos….later this week.  I have so many photos to rummage through.

Oh, and the R18 TDI is even cooler up close!

IEDEI going to Petit Le Mans.

The race is this Saturday—-in Atlanta, Georgia, and IEDEI-Audiphile will be there in full force with the Audi corral in the hospitality suite starting from Friday!  This is my first attending of an endurance race, and i’m damn excited to see my favourite race car (Audi R18 TDI) battle it out with Peugeot!  Expect plenty and lots of pics on Audiphile and here on IEDEI.

Audi racing veteran.

Quattroworld has a great feature about Don Istook and his long-time Audi racing history–including Ur quattros, S4s, and TTs–culminating recently in his delivery of the 1st North American TT-RS.   Fellow Audiphiles will surely appreciate the stories about his previous race cars that he built from the ground up, as well as some of his perspectives about these cars and experiences.

“Now, what I didn’t mention was that we got the truckload of parts on Friday…and we had to race Saturday morning!  Well, Rome wasn’t built in a day…but I WAS racing at Road Atlanta in the early 80’s when Jo helped out Tom Brennan, after Tom had written off one of the Porsche factory D Production 924’s.  Jo secured a brand new 924 D Production tub for Tom…had it shipped to the track…and that car WAS literally built in one day…made the DP race and finished 2nd!!  So, with that in mind…we got all the “stuff” put on the car and just made the grid for the start of the race.”
