is VW trying to buy Alfa Romeo (!?)

Well this is a hell of a rumour, that has been getting louder and louder over the past few months.  Fiat has been whining about Alfa Romeo not making any money for the company for a LONG time now….and according to several articles I have been reading as of late, it seems that Walter De Silva (ex-Alfa Romeo design chief, now VW/Audi design chief) has been urging Martin Winterkorn to really go after buying Alfa Romeo should Fiat decide to sell the brand.  Walter De Silva is so excited about this all, that according to one article i found, it states: “Given what is assumingly the passion for Alfa design, de Silva has in thoughts already about 8 models for Alfa, along with designs as well as drawings.” Easy boy!

To be honest, as someone who is REALLY into Audis and their philosophy, I have been seeing Audi as the new Alfa Romeo for the past few years…..they’re making the cars that Alfa should be making….and the Volkswagen group buying Alfa Romeo could REALLY rejuvenate the brand.

Is there any truth to this? we’ll have to see!  It could just be substance-less, gossip…..or it could be the real thing.  Knowing the way Volkswagen works, i wouldn’t doubt they are after the brand.

here are some articles about it:

fw: an open letter to Lancia

Came across this interesting “letter to lancia” on a site called Petrolblog.

http://petrolblog.com/2010/06/24/an-open-letter-to-lancia/

I gotta agree with you MajorGav, Lancia has lost the plot and really needs to get back to their identity.  The stuff they have been releasing for several years is GHASTLY……and in my opinion; Lancia might be THE biggest waste of a marque i’ve witnessed….amazing how Fiat just turned that company into slop.

But i gotta remind my friends over at Petrolblog, that Lancia is now going to be shacked up very closely to Chrysler; and it seems that for the time being, the identity of Lancia will continue to be lost.  A friend of mine who works in the auto industry had told me a couple years ago that there was a good chance that Lancia was going to be shut down; but now it seems they’ve found a new use for the marque Lancia.  It’s going to serve as a channel to pass Chrysler products into Europe.  What a shame.

It’s been said that the next generation Chrysler 300C is going to become Lancia’s flagship car in Europe….but the worst part is: there are supposedly only minimal changes done to the badges and the grille before it will be sold as a Lancia…….if that’s true, Lancia will be all but dead in my opinion…if it isn’t already.  I wish VW would buy Lancia and bring it back properly……imagine a Delta Integrale based on a modified R32/R20 platform? That’d be pretty sweet.

Unsold-in-the-USA car of the day.

Why AUDI doesn’t sell this in the USA, i have no idea.  This Audi S5 Sportback is simply gorgeous in every way.  In many ways, it’s even better looking than the S5 Coupe.

BRING IT TO THE USA, AUDI!!! Hopefully in time for when my family ‘expands’.

Weird and bizarre VWs in the chinese market…

Yeah, there are some oddities in the VW lineup when it comes to selling stuff in China. Most of all is the super weird MK2 Jetta, which is still a huuuuuge seller in the chinese market!  How the chinese keep buying it is beyond me.  It looks absolutely miserable.  The original MK2 was actually pretty damn good looking for the time—-the revised one, as you can see below…..is just……weird.

Then comes another grand surprise! VW still sells a version of the Quantum (yes, the 1980s VW Quantum!) under the name Santana Vista. How does it look? Well, again…it looks completely terrible.  Archaic technology, only the chinese could love….

Next there are two cars i have NO IDEA about.  One is called the VW Lavida….which looks almost like a Daewoo/Chevy/Kia and the other is just a bunch of chinese letters i cannot read.  These cars are probably being made in China or Korea, and selling under the guise of VW.  I can’t be arsed to really look up what they are….but it’s strange to see two VWs selling under the badge, while completely unknown outside the Chinese market.vw_lavida

rendering of a new Lancia Delta HF

luis_camino_lancia_delta_hf_render-02The original Lancia Delta Integrale was a beast of a car.  Obviously we never recieved it imported to the USA, so it was added to the mental list of “yes i want but i cannot have” and put aside into the closet.

Lately there’s been some talk of Chryslers being sold here as rebadged Lancia Deltas (see article http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1036481_chrysler-lancia-to-share-products-delta-could-come-to-u-s ).

Could this mean that if a Delta Integrale or Delta HF is produced, then we might see one? Maybe as an ‘SRT’ model?  Dodge Delta HF?  Sounds funny i know…but it would be fantastic!

I can’t tell you what the article says, because i don’t know spanish.  But the photos are great!

Thanks to Colla Verglas for the info: http://collaverglas.net/2009/10/17/per-somiar-que-no-quedi-lancia-delta-hf-per-luis-camino/

a $60,000+ Hyundai coming to the US?

Firstly, whatever drugs and illusionary potions the Hyundai personnel are taking must be working tremendously.  I think the press led you on to believe that your Genesis sedan and coupe were worthwhile options in the luxury sedan and coupe segments.  Sure….be happy and think you made a solid product.  The coupe is nothing more than a cut-rate Infiniti G37 (which isn’t a good thing!) and the sedan is a virtual rear end of a BMW E60 5-series and a Lexus LS (which is also not a good thing).

I thought (and still think) it’s pretty funny that Hyundai are selling a $40,000+ car in the Genesis sedan; i certainly wouldn’t buy one even if a kimchi covered gun was pointed to my head.  But hilariously enough, they’ve decided to launch a $60,000 sedan known as the Equus.  It will surely handle worse than 5-series, not have the majesty of an MB E-Class or S-Class, not be as modern of stylish as an Audi A6, and will be less reliable and more boring than an Lexus LS.  So do we want one?

NO THANKS, Hyundai!  Oh the horror….the horror.
