art of the day. Vespa 400.

Yes, there was a car made with the Vespa badge, called the 400.  rear engined and TINY.  Not much of a car i’m afraid, but this kitsch-y page from a vintage manual is worth a look for a bit of entertainment!

Abarth Simca 2000.

IEDEI prefers small coupes over everything else in the automotive world—-and part of the reason I get so obsessed with the idea of small rounded coupes is because they have so much character.  This one is no exception! the Abarth Simca 2000.

Capable of handing the Porsche 904 it’s own ass as well!  Impressive.  202 hp in such a tidy little package.

Most people associate Abarth with Fiat, but a very successful liaison was also formed with Simca. The French company was partly owned by Fiat, and when they wanted to appeal to a younger market with a more sporting image, they turned to the Italian giant for help.

Fiat in turn went to Abarth, who received sponsorship from the larger company. A deal was struck whereby Simca shipped floor pans of their 1000 Sabour to Abarth, who then cut 4″ out of the chassis and built handsome lightweight aluminum bodies around them.

The engine was an all-Abarth 1300cc four-cylinder twin-cam unit which produced up to 140 bhp and was mounted in the rear, while suspension was nearly stock Simca 1000, incorporating a transverse front leaf spring with telescopic dampers and upper wishbones and rear semi-trailing arms a la Porsche.

With this car, Abarth won the World Championship for Makes in 1962. The racing version of the Abarth Simca was developed throughout the 1960s, and the winning design was found to be more than a match for its competitors. In two-liter, 202 bhp specification, the Simca Abarth was easily able to beat the Porsche 904 on the track and won the European Mountain Climb Challenge outright.

foto of the day. M6

Like the Porsche Panamera, this is another car whose styling really didn’t sit well with me when i first saw it—–but a car which REALLY grew on me over the past few years.  I love the weird back end, and and I think they have plenty of road presence and attitude.  A stellar $90k car now available 2nd hand in the $40-50k range.  500hp and a hell of a performer…a shark.

foto of the day. people & quattro.

what an amazing photo, documenting the insanity of those 80s WRC Group B events; where people were literally inches and feet away from the most amazing rally cars driving full-on through the crowds.  Everyone was brave; the drivers and the fans.   This is from the 1984 Portugal Rally.

BMW: the (de)generations of design.

I grew up with BMW as my favourite marque; mainly because of my undying love for the E30 M3 when i was a young child.  I’m not sure why I wasn’t like other children who loved Corvettes and Porsches, because I wasn’t.  I still remember my parents buying me a radio controlled car when i was very young (9 or 10?), and I didn’t choose the red Porsche, i chose the dark grey E30 M3.  I wish i still had that radio controlled car…

Anyways, BMW is a company who i’ve watched deteriorate in charm.  They may still build very fast and potent automobiles—-but they leave me feeling numb.  The modern BMW design is stale and very non-BMW in many ways.  To be honest, the 1-series is the only BMW I am really a fan of—-and that is a great car to drive as well.

Here are 2 photos.  One of all the 5-series and one of all the 3-series.   The best ones are on the left side of the pictures.

foto of the day. C30 Polestar.

This car is badass…and nobody even knows what it is.  AWD. 400hp. 5 Cylinder turbo.

my sister has a regular C30, which I have to say—is quite an enjoyable to drive with the stock 210hp.  It is also, in my opinion, the best looking hatchback on sale in the US at the moment.    This Volvo C30 Polestar is only a concept, but it pretty much kicks absolute arse!  The big question then is—why does Volvo refuse to build it?

Gumpert Tornante.

i absolutely love this.  i still can’t figure out exactly why—-however there is something very ‘vintage’ and ‘futuristic’ about this design.  I even liked the vulgarity of their previous model (Gumpert Apollo)—-however i have to say that this one is not vulgar at all—-in fact it is stunningly cool.  I’m digging the rear taillights, the split window, the vintage pillars…epic cool.

foto of the day. TT.

I had no work today, but when i woke up i looked out the window and saw SNOW! everytime this happens, the voice of an 85 year-old rural farmer comes into my head and says “FIRE UP THE QUATTRO!”—–so i did.  driving in circles around my neighbourhood….it was lovely.  Grabbed some breakfast….and took the time to take a photo representing my morning.
