Influencers

An interesting video.  Occasionally borders on cliche, however covers a topic which I often think about.  The subtlety by which influencers pass on information to their environment and the people around them is fascinating.  This video often deals a bit too much about goods and services, however I feel some of the same principles would apply to philosophical, ideological, and even political ideas.

Assembling the Leica M9.

I’m still really excited about my Leica M8.1, however I always wondered how these cameras are made.  Leica always states these are hand  assembled, and this fantastic video shows the M8 successor, the M9 in its assembling phases. Very cool attention to detail, and this is part of the reason why their products cost so much.   The factory (laboratory?) is also very very german….which is a good thing!

Unfortunately the embedding function does not work on this video (not sure why)…but click through this link to watch: http://vimeo.com/6551861

the return of IEDEI.

IEDEI is returning.

However, there are some changes.

The automotive archive for the past 4 years will remain, however this site is evolving into a site about much more than just automobiles.  My thoughts are evolving, and so IEDEI will also evolve.  From the beginning, the site was never meant to turn into a site only about the automobile—however unfortunately that is what happened to the site.  There will occasionally be articles about automobiles, however if one is expecting to find petrol being pumped through your monitor on every visit; this will not be the case.  There is much to see, much to appreciate, and much to investigate.  Onwards and onwards!

I hope you enjoy the new IEDEI.  If you ever want to contribute or if you have something fascinating (remember, not just automobile related)—please email me at IEDEIblog@gmail.com

I also want to thank the many of you who took the time to e-mail you all the kind words and wishes in regards to the blog ending a couple of months ago.  It was very nice to read your mails, and i’m still catching up on writing you all back.  I felt it was time to ‘start a new idea’….however i felt this site was already so developed and had such a lovely title and image, that it would just be more interesting to start a ‘2nd phase’ of this.

(the photo above was published in a 1931 copy of The Country Gentleman was a prediction of how a farmer will control his crops in the year 2030.  Nice flat screen TV design, huh?)

IEDEI bids farewell.

It is with a heavy heart that i’ve decided to discontinue updating IEDEI.  I have thoroughly enjoyed posting over the last nearly 4 years and have enjoyed talking and meeting many of you.  I am only one person, and simply do not have the capacity to go on posting.  It is unfortunate at a time when the blog has been rapidly gaining popularity—-however I simply do not have the time, emotion, or capacity to research and update as I would like.  Many posts I make are not simply uploading a photo or linking to outside places.  To find that content takes time…..it takes passion….and it takes effort.

With all of this being said…it’s possible that in the future I may re-start this site, however at this time I am not thinking about it.  I’ve loved cars since the age of 2…however I’ve also realised that over time—things change.

As a fitting final post….i would like to leave you with a simply wonderful video of 2 cars I love—-and one of which is the center of which everything on this blog was inspired by: the Alpine A110.

Please feel free to email me at IEDEIblog@gmail.com if you’d ever like to collaborate on any projects, or if you’d like me to write an article….or if you just want to talk.   The IEDEI site will remain online for the time being, as an archive for people to find and enjoy.

Much love to the gear shifting brothas.  This video is for you.

Driverless car and futuristic roads!

from 1957, a vision of the future!  It’s like Leave It To Beaver.…except Wally is a girl.   Google eat your heart out!

And here’s the kicker, an excerpt from the 1958 Disney show “Magic Highway”.  Some fascinating ideas going on here!  Here’s hoping that we have this kind of imagination still kicking around for the next 50 years.

ad of the day. Karma.

When I first saw the Fisker Karma, I wasn’t too keen on it.  But as time as gone by, I think it is a truly stunning & beautiful car with tremendous attention to detail; interior and exterior.  Henrik Fisker is a pretty interesting designer (he also designed 2 of my favourite modern designs; the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin AMV8), and I think he’s designed a pretty remarkable car.   I’d have one in black with the full Alcantara interior….and when I mean “full”….i mean REALLY full Alcantara interior (dash, steering wheel, console, seats, etc).  Wicked.

And it’s promoted with a pretty fantastic print ad!

Processing of Leather.

I am quite fond of leather and suede—the feel, the chemically treated smell, the wearing patterns, and the differences in quality and texture.   The other day I found myself searching for explanations of how leather is made, and I found a couple of interesting videos—-3 videos which could not be contrasted any better, but all three of them beautifully filmed in their own way.  Most excellent.

Saab LIVES!

This time it seems it is for real.  NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden), which is a Swedish company—-has purchased Saab!  Price is not disclosed.  BBC reports this as a “Swedish-Chinese investment group”, however I find that a bit odd, seeing as the CEO of NEVS is a Swedish Citzen…..

EDIT: Apparently NEVS is owned by a Hong Kong firm, so ‘Swedish-Chinese’ is accurate assessment!

As someone who has always admired Saabs and at one point wanted a Saab 900 as my first car when I was 15 (i never did get one, but my mum did!), I am really glad to think that the marque may live another day!

Here’s hoping it sticks this time…

“The Secret Life of Colin Chapman” documentary.

I like people who challenge the status-quo…in fact I most respect people who challenge the status quo.  Whether it is in science, writing, art, or motoring.  In the history of the automobile, there are several names that instantly come to mind; Colin Chapman would definitely be one of them.

This is a fantastic 5-part documentary uploaded onto YouTube, and originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK several years ago.  A pleasant way to spend 50 minutes—-even if his fall wasn’t nearly as graceful as his rise.

A110-50 in detail and production Alpine coming to 2012 Paris Auto Show.

I fell hard for the Renault Alpine A110-50 Concept  introduced on May 25th at the Monaco Grand Prix.  Here are some fantastic close-up detail shots of the concept, confirming that the level of detail is just beautiful on it.  From the success of the concept, it appears we are going to see some sort of a production Alpine concept at the Paris Auto Show in the Autumn.  I’m really not sure how finished of a product we may see—however i’m quite confident based on people i’ve spoken to that there will be something on display at the Paris show resembling a production Alpine, at least in concept form.

50 years ago, Jean Redele introduced the production Alpine A110 at the 1962 Paris Auto Show.  Renault is going to do something similar with a production, street-version of the A110-50.  As usual, IEDEI will be ahead of the game when it comes to publishing news about it!

foto of the day. ideal sunday.

I’m envious of my friend George (of Fourtitude) for a couple reasons.  (A) He is just arriving to France for Le Mans week….and (B) he posted the photo of this RS3 he gets to drive from Paris to La Sarthe.

It’s a hard life, eh George!

is this the Porsche Pajun?

expected price of around $55k?  Where do i sign?

In all likelihood, considering the source (Auto Express)—these are likely modified photos using a Panamera as a base, but after the debacle of the A110-50, who knows anymore!

I love the Panamera and judging by the way this looks, I love this even more….WOW.  Porsche is going to go big time if they launch this in the Audi S4 price range….although I would expect, as with all Porsches, the price will climb higher quickly with a few options.

Nice video put together by Mercedes-Benz—-showing a short history of AMG.  I admit to having a soft spot for Mercedes-Benz…always have, always likely will.

video of the day. chassis test.

Before the fantastic Renault Alpine A110-50 put on its futuristic body, it underwent testing!  As we know, the A110-50 is based on the Megane Trophy, and has been adapted and tweaked into the A110-50.  It’s pretty wicked to watch the skeleton going around the track…courtesy of the excellent Type 01

Audi Mobile Museum.

This is a place i’d really love to go to.  The Audi Mobile Museum of Ingolstadt.  There are many photos and videos of this fantastic place online, but I love the photography done by Yan Alexandre for Blenheim Gang

the awkward: BMW Zagato Coupe.

Well this is an odd looking car isn’t it.  The standard, current generation Z4 is not a bad looking car, however it has always seemed too long and a bit awkward.  So how do you reckon making an already awkward car even more awkward can happen?  Oh yes that would be the job of Zagato.

Zagato have always made strange looking cars, no question about it.  Sometimes their madness pays off (Alfa Junior Z, Lancia Hyena, Lancia Fulvia Sport, Alfa Giuletta SZ), although it seems lately that everything they make sort of looks like a parody of the ‘old-school’ Zagato designs.

So Zagato have now rebodied a Z4 into what is know known as a BMW Zagato Coupe.  I think it looks pretty subpar, if i’m honest…and I find the BMW-Zagato connection to be a little strange.  That being said….it IS interesting—-although I think the previous generation Z4 Coupe would rather accomplish all of this in a far more attractive manner.

In the old days, these sorts of awkward body styles really did work—mainly because the bumpers were not ‘integrated’ as they are now, and the wheels weren’t absurdly large and bulky like they are today.

the BMW Zagato Coupe is debut’ing at this year’s Villa D’Esta.

the sketches actually looked pretty promising…

here’s a video discussing the idea and design of the car:

L’Alpine has landed!

I will be posting lots of photos and videos (hopefully) from today’s Alpine A110-50 concept debut.  As someone who is very excited and enthusiastic about the past and future of the Alpine marque—today should be a fascinating day!

Carlos Tavares, Chief Operating Officer at Renault….i dig the Alpine threads, man!

introducing: the Alpine A110-50!

In all its glory.  I only have one word i can say right now: WANT

I am severely biased towards anything Alpine….but honestly lately i’ve REALLY been getting into ‘futuristic’ cars meeting ‘vintage’ in their philosophy…..and THIS is just brilliant.  Magical, even.  Renault read my mind.

big thanks to my friend Jon for tipping me about these photos!  Unfortunately they are low-resolution; however i’m sure there will be plenty of high-res pics after tomorrow.  Tomorrow there should be a lot more information about the technical specs, such as exact engine (400hp V6?)—but what we can confirm is that it is mid-engined.

Alpine Zar/A110-50 design pretty much confirmed (+ video teaser)

So while i stand by my statement that the previous A110-50/Zar photo was indeed a photoshop, it appears the design itself is pretty much how the ‘new’ Alpine concept is going to look! (big thank you to Neo Luxembourg for these tips!)

this photo was published by Renault themselves!

And then there’s this photo of a bloke working on a clay model, which looks basically exactly like the photoshopped picture!  This was published on Figaro and the photo is on Worldscoop HERE:

additionally, Renault have released a 30 second video clip ‘teaser’….which I am not able to embed on this site, however you can watch it here!

Where are they now? Chris Bangle.

“It starts with drinking the cognac, it ends with drinking the cognac”

A couple videos about how ex-BMW design guru Chris Bangle was asked to redesign the Hennessey bottle.   The real question here is, is there flame surfacing involved!?

spy pics: MQB 5-door A3 Sportback

Well this is the new version of my beloved 8P A3 Sportback!  The MQB version looks like a direct evolution, with a very similar overall look and a more chiseled rear bumper and taillight treatment.  The overall proportions and profile are very similar, but modernised to current Audi design.  Great stuff……I hope it comes to the US market again, and I hope this time they bring the damn RS3—although from my info feed, only the sedan will arrive here (if it arrives) as the RS model!
