hatchbacks: Suzuki Swift Sport

After my trip to Italy, I found myself with a new appreciation for ‘small’ hatchbacks one can throw around into parking spots—-one of my favourite hatchbacks i saw in Italy was the Suzuki Swift Sport.  Firstly, their interiors are very cool and little hot hatch-ish goodness—i like their boxy, functional lines, and they have a very planted look to them in person.  I didn’t see many of these during my trip—-but the 2 or 3 of them I did see convinced me I liked them.  Rumour has it that Suzuki will introduce this car to the US market this year—–hey Suzuki—-DO IT! pioneer the ‘new’ hot hatch movement in the states!

I just went to the UK Suzuki site, and found that this 125 HP, 2400 pounds….for 12,995 GBP.  If they brought this car over here for $15k, it would be absolutely stellar……hey Suzuki…..DO IT!

btw, here’s the latest Suzuki Swift S-Concept presented in March at the Geneva Auto Show….a little ‘overdone’ in styling, but upgraded performance likely makes the upgrades worth it.  Digging the functional and tidy interior as well.

foto of the day. TT-RS official debut in the USA!

the Audi TT-RS has just made its official debut at the Chicago Auto Show as an official Audi USA product for this market.  And what a car……360hp ugraded 2.5L 5-cylinder which howls like nothing else on the market at the moment….i know, because i saw one in person last summer at VW Waterfest.   As an Audi fan, i’m always listening to some of the Audi corporate news feeds, and apparently the US market will ONLY get a manual transmission; however they are saying that the DSG version of the car does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.  3.6 seconds!!!! BRUTAL!  and with style that only the TT can have…..price? $60k.  superb.

Trans-Am racing.

Can-Am and Trans-Am racing were easily THE glory days of american road racing.  Will american road racing ever get something as cool as this ever again? doubtful.  Look at the style of the public at those races, and look at the lively attendance.  As I type this, I am watching the Continental Sports Car Challenge on SpeedTV and thinking it may be the only descendent left of the original Trans-Am series; however there is hardly a crowd there, barely any enthusiasm, and lacking great drivers like the Trans-Am series had.  What a shame.

who? what? how? want? B5 RS4 Avant for sale in the US.

How in the world did this guy manage to get three B5 RS4s into this country!?  This is the ultimate german avant——what a stance.  If he can just share his secrets with me about how he got it here, and how I CAN get one of my ultimate dream cars (Audi RS2) into this country; i would be greatly appreciative!  I am not even understanding HOW he got these dot certified; apparently the owner of this car has 2 more!  I know one person personally who imported a B5 RS4 into the country, however it took him much effort and several years to even get the car once it was quarantined.

He’s asking $49k….which is quite expensive–but to an Audi enthusiast; really isn’t a bad price at all considering its rarity and desirability in this country.  I’m sure the right person will snap this up for around the price of a B8 S4.

beautiful 1985 ur quattro coupe for sale.

my love for the ur quattro is growing by the week (especially since i’ve been racing a modded one on GT5 these days!)…it has now become one of my automotive holy grails (if it wasn’t already), and much MUCH more affordable than my ultimate holy grail which is the Alpine A110 ($50k+ now easily).

here’s a beautiful one for sale in Connecticut.  Just posted today—so if you really want a place in the IEDEI envy books plop down the cash, kids! Gorgeous in every way

he’s asking $16,500 for the car.  102k miles.  a very fine example. Finished in “amazon blue”, one of 73 cars in this colour from that year. If you are interested, email me iedeiblog@gmail.com for more information.

wants on ebay: RS2 Coupe! (conversion)

Damn you, Ebay.

I’ve been lusting after the incredible Audi RS2 for a while (it’s going to take heroic measures to prevent me from having one once that silly 25 year NHTSA rule expires on them)…..but this Audi Coupe has been beautifully converted into something very VERY close to what an Audi RS2 Coupe would have looked like if it was ever produced.  Was a RS2 Coupe ever produced?  Remains as a controversy, however I have read that internally ONE of them was produced; and i’ve also read that Porsche wouldn’t build the car for Audi, because they felt it would compete with the Porsches of the time.  The Avant version which did make it to production, clearly did not compete…..

This car is gorgeous.  On sale in Canada at the moment.   I’m so glad there are rules complicating the issue of canadian and american cars between imported between the countries; because IF THIS car were on sale in the US, i would have been SO SO SO tempted.   Seems like the best alternative for a continent which was deprived of one of the greatest Audis ever made; the RS2.

470hp Porsche tuned RS2 engine.

GT5 details for Japan.

i’m not a big video game buff, but damn i gotta say i’ve HUGELY enjoyed the Gran Turismo series over the years.  So many classic cars, new cars, supercars, regular cars, modifying, some of the world’s greatest tracks, places i don’t think i’ll ever go to…..it’s like being able to enact a dream garage as realistically as possible……..

I haven’t bought a PS3, but i’m definitely ready to buy one when GT5 (Gran Turismo 5) comes out.  And now, FINALLY, after what seems like several years of rumours and gossip; it seems there are some concrete details!

November 3rd is the day it goes on sale in Japan.  What does that mean for us? I have no idea—they’ll probably try to create some cheesy holiday chaos for it, so that none of us will be able to find it…bastards.  But in Japan, they will get a special GT5 Edition PS3 bundled package.  This is the package I would buy, if they make it available here—here’s to hoping they do.  Check out the photo below for what it’ll look like.

is VW trying to buy Alfa Romeo (!?)

Well this is a hell of a rumour, that has been getting louder and louder over the past few months.  Fiat has been whining about Alfa Romeo not making any money for the company for a LONG time now….and according to several articles I have been reading as of late, it seems that Walter De Silva (ex-Alfa Romeo design chief, now VW/Audi design chief) has been urging Martin Winterkorn to really go after buying Alfa Romeo should Fiat decide to sell the brand.  Walter De Silva is so excited about this all, that according to one article i found, it states: “Given what is assumingly the passion for Alfa design, de Silva has in thoughts already about 8 models for Alfa, along with designs as well as drawings.” Easy boy!

To be honest, as someone who is REALLY into Audis and their philosophy, I have been seeing Audi as the new Alfa Romeo for the past few years…..they’re making the cars that Alfa should be making….and the Volkswagen group buying Alfa Romeo could REALLY rejuvenate the brand.

Is there any truth to this? we’ll have to see!  It could just be substance-less, gossip…..or it could be the real thing.  Knowing the way Volkswagen works, i wouldn’t doubt they are after the brand.

here are some articles about it:

rare NYC sighting: a modern Alfa Romeo GTV Spider.

Saw this little thing in Soho yesterday, a 1.8 Twin Spark Alfa Romeo GTV Spider.  Pretty lovely looking car…..and very rare to see in the US.  There was a “for sale” sign laying inside the car, with a price of $15k.  I’ve sent an email to the owner just out of curiousity to see what he says (i’m not really interested, however i am curious about the story!).  If anyone reading this is interested in buying the car, lemme know and i’ll pass along whatever info i find!

fw: an open letter to Lancia

Came across this interesting “letter to lancia” on a site called Petrolblog.

http://petrolblog.com/2010/06/24/an-open-letter-to-lancia/

I gotta agree with you MajorGav, Lancia has lost the plot and really needs to get back to their identity.  The stuff they have been releasing for several years is GHASTLY……and in my opinion; Lancia might be THE biggest waste of a marque i’ve witnessed….amazing how Fiat just turned that company into slop.

But i gotta remind my friends over at Petrolblog, that Lancia is now going to be shacked up very closely to Chrysler; and it seems that for the time being, the identity of Lancia will continue to be lost.  A friend of mine who works in the auto industry had told me a couple years ago that there was a good chance that Lancia was going to be shut down; but now it seems they’ve found a new use for the marque Lancia.  It’s going to serve as a channel to pass Chrysler products into Europe.  What a shame.

It’s been said that the next generation Chrysler 300C is going to become Lancia’s flagship car in Europe….but the worst part is: there are supposedly only minimal changes done to the badges and the grille before it will be sold as a Lancia…….if that’s true, Lancia will be all but dead in my opinion…if it isn’t already.  I wish VW would buy Lancia and bring it back properly……imagine a Delta Integrale based on a modified R32/R20 platform? That’d be pretty sweet.

Porsche Boxster Spyder delivered…

Not mine, of course….but a friend of mine and a previous (multiple) TT owner has taken delivery of his brand new white Porsche Boxster Spyder.  Pretty aggressive looking car, with some very interesting design cues pertaining to the roof.  The interior looks fantastic.  These are the first ‘real world’ pics of this car i’ve seen, and it looks much better than the official pics that were released!  Must be a helluvalot of fun to throw around turns!

Thanks to Quattive for letting me post pics of his car.

MTM Horchaus gives up on trying to import RS6s, etc….

Previously, IEDEI had broken the story about how Canadian importer MTM Horchaus was attempting to import certain Audi models unsold in North America legally into this hemisphere. Back then I had spoken to the people at the company and had been told there was steady and sure progress…..however here’s the current statement by Horchaus:

“With regards to our project of bringing European models to Canada, we have to admit that we did not succeed.

We did not manage to work our way through the regulatory commissions to ensure that the cars indeed meet all North American regulations.

We had a strategy that we thought was appealing in importing pre-owned vehicles to a very competitive price but we could not finalize the legalization of these vehicles here without the appropriate collaborators.

We are very disapointed and humbly apologize for false hopes that the leak to the internet might have caused.

As a key player in Canada’s tuning and performance industry, we maintain our strong commitment to bringing you sophisticated, high-performance German engineering and personalized services to help you create the most memorable driving experience time and time again.”

i guess IEDEI was the “leak to the internet”….OOPS!

Unsold-in-the-USA car of the day.

Why AUDI doesn’t sell this in the USA, i have no idea.  This Audi S5 Sportback is simply gorgeous in every way.  In many ways, it’s even better looking than the S5 Coupe.

BRING IT TO THE USA, AUDI!!! Hopefully in time for when my family ‘expands’.

aha! the Audi Q3 must be on its way to the USA soon…..

Yeah we don’t care much about SUVs here at IEDEI……however I am pretty into Audis….and having driven an Audi Q5 through an autocross track before here in NY, I must say I had gained quite a bit of respect for Audi SUVs.  Well anyways, it seems IEDEI stumbled upon a ‘future plan’ by accident!

Auto Trader has placed the AUDI Q3 in its drop down menu of cars for selection on the site (SEE PHOTO ABOVE).  This surely hints that the Q3 is on its way to the US market sometime soon.  The Q5 has been a huge success for Audi (a waiting list to buy one at the moment), so it would make sense that Audi is bringing a smaller and even cheaper small SUV.

it’s actually a pretty damn good looking SUV if i must say so myself…..even though SUVs are parasites and should be burned in massive flames! err…just sayin…

Alfa Romeo return to the USA confirmed for 2012?

(above: Alfa Romeo Dress)

Motor Trend is reporting some info on the return of Alfa Romeo to the US market in 2012.  Fiat supposedly released a 5-year plan today, with information on the US market, Chrysler, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and how these products will be integrated into this market.

So 2012 is supposedly the debut of the Alfa Romeo Giulia (159 replacement) and MT is saying these will be RWD and based (loosely, hopefully) on the 300c and Challenger platforms.  This should be in Sedan and Wagon formats.  In 2013, will be the addition of a (new) Spider which will be based also on a RWD Chrysler format (wait a minute…the Challenger and 300c are HUGE….so what platform!?).

Either way, FIAT have been giving us this crap for many years now…so whether it happens is unknown….whether it happens on TIME is even more unknown…..but i DO hope it happens.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta; official pics

the worst part of this story is that it seems the car is NOT coming to the USA.  oh Fiat you are causing us great pain y’know….meanwhile, check out a few official pics.  GORGEOUS.  not entirely convinced by the interior, but i’m sure the materials and finish are superb as Alfa Romeo interiors generally are.

Several different versions have been developed: two Quadrifoglio Verde (Cloverleaf) models fitted with a 235 horsepower 1.75-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, two Distinctive models fitted with a 170 horsepower 2.0-liter JTDM turbodiesel engine and a Base model fitted with a 170 horsepower 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged gasoline mill.

All the engines are teamed with a six-speed manual as standard while the MultiAir and JTDM engines are available with an optional dual clutch automatic transmission.
