IEDEI Solutions: Hey Volkswagen! Buy Saab!

Yeah, that’s right.  I think VW should buy Saab.  Why? Here are my reasons.

1. SAAB hasn’t made a profit in years, and likely has debts.  VW has a huge amount of money at the moment, and is one of the only companies that can absorb the debt AND has the ability to bring Saab back into the global auto market with shared platforms, new engines, and most of all a brand identity.

2. Volkswagen’s global auto empire.  the Volkswagen Auto Group spans from Germany to Spain to Czech to Italy to all sorts of smaller conglomerates in China and South America, and what better international frontier than Scandinavia.  Yeah, VW needs a Swedish side to it.

3. F*ck Koeniggsegg….BUY THEM AS WELL if you want.

4. Relaunch a Saab 900 on the VW Golf platform, as a smaller, more practical solution built with a SAAB image……and with SAAB personality.

5. Launch the ‘new’ 9-5 (which i love the styling of….) on a VW/AUDI platform (A4 or A6?).

6. Make it a specialized brand with profitability and character.

7. Cancel silly developments like those Saab SUVs that GM was doing….

8. IEDEI told you to.

COME ON VOLKSWAGEN! you know you want some Swedish in yer.

saab is on fire.

not in a good way. in a bad way.

Koeniggsegg announced today that they are NOT going to purchase Saab….those supercar making bastards have changed their mind—–AGAIN.

So SAAB is really on it’s last life now.  Will it burn and fade away like Pontiac and Saturn? Is there something else that’s gonna save it?

VOLKSWAGEN? Imagine that.

editorial: Honda, Toyota & the US market.

How Honda and Toyota took over the U.S. market.

In the past fifty years, the US auto market has declined tremendously.  With the recent bankruptcy and unsteady industry forecasts, Americans feel uneasy giving their hard earned money to a faltering establishment.  As a result, foreign auto makers like Honda and Toyota are capitalizing on the prospect, raking in all of the U.S. auto business.  In addition, Honda and Toyota continue to break the barrier of new technologies which astound the industry time and time again.

Honda has enjoyed much success in the U.S. auto markets.  With the introduction of the Civic in 1975, Honda’s popularity rose with each passing year.  The new, lighter Honda Civic rivaled its U.S. competition with its low weight and small exterior.  Furthermore, the EPA, in order to reduce emissions, required the addition of expensive catalytic converters in all cars manufactured for the United States auto industry.  As a result, sticker prices rose while consumer demand plummeted.

As American auto makers rebuilt their exhaust systems, Honda busied themselves with the creation of the new CVCC stratified charge engine.   Cars built with these new engines passed the required emissions tests without the need for expensive catalytic converters.  This charge engine technology burst onto the scene with the 1975 Honda Civic, a car met with extreme consumer demand.  With the rising costs of gas and auto insurance, Americans turned their focus to the Japanese auto maker to save money.

VW buys out Karmann & plans new car.

Karmann was of course made famous by the strange and interesting Karmann Ghia, which used Beetle underpinnings with a much prettier and more interesting body shell to create something interesting with.  Of course the company went on to build other cars with VW, and with other companies (Let’s try to forget that Karmann built the Chrysler Crossfire convertibles…which were truly terrible).

The company went bust recently, and now VW has announced that they will be buying all of the assets, and also will plan to build a ‘new’ car using their facilities.  Maybe they’ll bring back a ‘modern’ Karmann Ghia? That would be damn interesting.  Most likely suspect is the upcoming Bluesport roadster.

lamborghini + tag heuer = phone!

tag-heuer-lamborghini-meridiist-cell-phone

It’s always funny when Lamborghini gets involved with any project.  Now they’ve joined with TAG Heuer to make a cell phone.  Look at how thick it is, that’s because it has an acoustic chamber inside for better sound.  See that glass? It’s sapphire crystal as used in Tag watches, the housing is all titanium….they’re only making 630 of them, and i’m sure they’ll be quite expensive.  So save your pennies and make an iPhone user feel like a cheapass…

Toyota cars unsafe?

toyota prius

Is Toyota covering up some sort of a real unintended acceleration problem?  Could this be a re-hash of Audi in the 80s? Audi nearly went bust after this issue…could this mean that the Toyota empire is on the brink of getting into a ton of trouble? Guess we’ll have to wait to find out…

Here at IEDEI, we are just hoping that the Prius is the main car affected by this, and all the cars are collected and destroyed! ha!

supercar FAIL? Lexus LF-A

11-lexus-lfa-press

Who is gonna buy a  $200k+ Lexus?  I know most people who are shopping for a car with a $200k budget are certainly NOT going to.  So who is gonna buy it? The Japanese, probably…and maybe some arab and korean billionaires.  Who is gonna ditch a Lambo to buy this? or a GT3? or an F458 Italia?

Obviously, Lexus are making this car for image’s sake—however it certainly doesn’t have a classic shape in any way, in fact it reminds me (almost a little too much) of those awkward “sports cars’ they used to sell in the 80s and 90s—like the Dodge Stealth, Subaru SVX, and Nissan 300zx.  Cheesy, at best…

So congratulations Lexus, you’ve built one hell of an ugly supercar.  But what can it do?  Looks like pretty standard supercar stuff as you can read below.  Nothing a Porsche turbo can’t deal with…

rendering of a new Lancia Delta HF

luis_camino_lancia_delta_hf_render-02The original Lancia Delta Integrale was a beast of a car.  Obviously we never recieved it imported to the USA, so it was added to the mental list of “yes i want but i cannot have” and put aside into the closet.

Lately there’s been some talk of Chryslers being sold here as rebadged Lancia Deltas (see article http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1036481_chrysler-lancia-to-share-products-delta-could-come-to-u-s ).

Could this mean that if a Delta Integrale or Delta HF is produced, then we might see one? Maybe as an ‘SRT’ model?  Dodge Delta HF?  Sounds funny i know…but it would be fantastic!

I can’t tell you what the article says, because i don’t know spanish.  But the photos are great!

BMW commercial FAIL.

BMW has decidedly become more tacky as the 90’s concluded and the 00’s began.  The cars have declined, in my opinion, and their strategy, designs, and overall brand identity have undergone a process of failure.  Currently their sales are dropping by the day; losing momentum to the imminent rise of Audi, Lexus, and a resurging popularity of Mercedes-Benz.

That being said, it is readily apparent these days that BMW is MOST worried about Audi and their slow and steady growth (even through the recession).  So what are BMW gonna do about it?

They have released one of the cheesiest, nonsensical, and empty commercials i’ve seen in a long time.  Nice one BMW.  Even that previous generation Audi A4 you’ve put sort of makes the current 3-series look pale.  If they had put the new B8 A4, it would have surely converted more buyers into Audi drivers than BMW ones.  Ultimately, what this commercial does is make BMW drivers look worse than their current image already suggests…

And the slow decline of BMW continues…

The car FIAT (Alfa Romeo) needs to bring to the USA…

Well, it’s been years of keeping fingers crossed for Alfa Romeos and Fiats to start coming to the USA.  Every few months, I see a ‘new’ article stating FIAT’s intent or specific predictions of import plans, or ‘new’ ideas of how FIAT will support bringing their italian-bred machinery back to the US market.

ALFA ROMEO 149 GTA (Milano)

Alfa Romeo 149 GTA

So it’s too late to ask for a 147 GTA as it is being soon discontinued in favour of the new 149.  Which is why we are gonna ask for that!  A lower priced, italian hatchback with some guts and style is EXACTLY what Alfa Romeo should bring to the US market upon their return.  I really hope they don’t blur clear thoughts and think that all they need to bring back are ‘luxury’ cars….Alfa needs to bring cars with SOUL.  Small cars that feel more expensive, perform well, and are fun to own.  I can’t think of anything better than a GTA hatchback for the resurrection of the Alfa Romeo brand in the USA.

IEDEI vs. Toyota Prius (Round 2): extincting rare metals.

Toyota-Prius

My quest to reduce the popularity of the Toyota Prius continues.  Hybrids are not without harm, in fact they cause their OWN sort of damage.  Here is further evidence, as the manufacturing of Hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prion…err…Prius is leading to depletion of rare, earch metals.  In their mad scramble for these metals required for the manufacturing of their cars, companies like Toyota are simply walking over and/or stepping over whatever or whomever it takes to keep their piece of the pie.

Hybrid FAIL….again.

Mercedes-Benz introduce: SLS AMG Gullwing

I’m hearing $225,000+ and mid 3s for 0-60 for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing.  It’s been tested extensively on the Nurburgring, so i’m guessing it’ll have some handling behind it.  I think the styling is a bit BLAH, considering the glorious original Gullwing it is attempting to replicate the feeling of.  Obviously, this is one of those ‘modern retro’ type projects (e.g. Camaro, BMW Z8, etc…), and although it may look several times more striking in real life; the photos don’t seem to really give out the feeling of ‘classic’ just yet.  I do love the interior though…..very sharp—-even though the automatic transmission looks like crap sitting in an interior as nice as that one.

IEDEI has turned the ‘official’ SLS photos into B&W, to see if it fits the bill of ‘classic’…..download the photos in hi-res after clicking each one twice…..and then YOU decide whether it’s a classic or not!

Porsche releases photos of the Ltd. Edition “Sport Classic”

Porsche_911_Sport_Classic_old_carrera_rs

Obviously the people in charge of naming this ‘new’ version weren’t exactly scientists in creativity, and it ALMOST sounds like they must have fired the guy responsible for naming it the day before; thus eliminating any chance of a proper name.  Either way, Porsche have decided that there must be 250 people dumb enough to put down $250,000+ on what can basically only be described as a Carrera S with 20-25 extra HP and ‘special’ modern interpretations of the original 70s Carrera RS Fuchs wheels.

My solution? Buy a regular Carrera S for $80k.  Buy the vinyl decals for a few hundred dollars, to get you those matte stripes……chip the engine to get you an extra 20hp (or more).  Pain the car whatever colour you want, even the aviator grey-like colour this one is in.  Buy the Pseudo-Fuchs wheels aftermarket.  You’re still under $100k…and you’ll look damn good doing it.  Skip on the polished steel lip though….i’d go solid black on the wheels.

VW board murders the Cayenne and Panamera…

2008_Porsche_Cayenne_ext_1 copy

porsche-panamera copy

…and simultaneously gives Porsche a big kick in the nuts.

I love Porsches, and i’ve wanted one ever since I was a kid; I guess i would be joined by MOST men in saying that Porsches are the holy grail of motoring for alot of us.  But in the last several years, the 911 has been desirable; however Porsche as a brand has become impure, commercialized, and devoid of the ‘purity’ character it used to carry.

The Cayenne has always been a royal waste of space.  It is truly a rebadged VW Touraeg, whether one wants to believe it or not.  It is also ugly as sin, driven primarily by women who don’t give a damn about driving dynamics, and was perfectly molded for a nice parking spot in front of a Starbucks to collect an afternoon latte more than actual driving…

The Panamera is a Porsche designing FAIL.  There really is no other way to look at the car.  I don’t care how fast it is, how good it is, or how much technical achievement it has…..Porsches were never made to be 4-doors (aside from special projects like the Audi-Porsche RS2 Avant)….and If Porsche recently became so keen to produce the Panamera, then they have really lost the plot.

So it seems the Cayenne and Panamera will continue until 2016, when their current run will end—-and they will both end! Discontinued!

BRAVO VW BOARD!! Maybe you will sort out Porsche by cracking them a kick in the nuts for their recent failures…..and maybe you can tell Koeniggsegg to sort out Saab while you’re at it!

Honda mourns the loss of Pontiac by….

2010 Acura ZDX

building their own Aztec!  Oh come on, Honda—you can put all the Acura logos you want on it, along with the most repulsive grille imaginable in the automotive world; but you ain’t fooling us! Just admit it! You miss the Pontiac Aztec so much that you had to go and build yer own.

Terrible…just terrible.  I hope they all get thrown into the ocean!  It’s called the Acura ZDX, and it needs to be killed….
